That is why we can't have nice things any more, just stay inside and play video games.

You're supposed to realize that this shit very very rarely happens and have rhe tiniest smidgen of courage-- otherwise you leave it open to brownshirts and klansmen and such to take whatever they want. Or to fly your airplane into a skyscraper and kill three thousand other people-- and you anyway-- because you are scared of boxcutters.

You don't have to be Audie Murphy, you just have to not stay indoors because it might rain somewhere sometime.

The past three posts here don't get it at all. We're talking about a kid walking up to a front door, ringing a ********ing doorbell and getting shot at. No, being confronted with a gun isn't normal, but aggressive hostility is not uncommon.

@Timon19, I'm sure you would be right to come to the door with a gun if I was outside.

Maybe I'm a total idiot (take your shots now), but I have no ********ing idea what you mean.

So what? You just say "okay" and move on down the street.

Yes. But it’s much easier to rage on internet bulletin boards than do that.

In 50 years, their version of Julian Bond will be telling stories about all the blunt, cutting posts they made on BigSoccer and how they got trolled for it, LOL.

It’s something I would expect her to say because she’s a decent person.

I'd love that, but how they went about it isn't safe anymore, if ever it was.
Your neighborhood may be safe <shrugs>

    Exactly.

Sacrifice for a better outcome (stuff like sit-ins at lunch counters) is one thing. Getting shot (at) by some conservative because my band needs trip money?

He didn't say, "Okay" but he did move down the street.

Avoiding going door-to-door in white neighborhoods where people of dodgy character might be lurking is not the same thing as allowing terrorists to do their work.

"One of these three pieces of boiled okra will give you acute diarrhea... now display a smidgen of courage and eat any two"... nah, I don't dig boiled okra anyway.

They had something to fight for.
I see no reason to fight for someone else's shot at democracy when my own shot is still on deck.

You can call your own number with foolish actions.

It's safe here (a suburban-feel neighborhood) and it's safe across the highway in Firestone Park (an old, poor, former company neighborhood with lots of Cascarino's favorite people in it).

I don't doubt that it's safe from certain kinds of crime. But could a Black kid sell band candy there without ever having to deal with any sort of negative reaction from any White residents there? It's that guarantee that's difficult for anyone to offer, I'd think.

Truth told, I never thought much about the idea of going d-t-d anyway, asking folks to pay for what should be paid thru taxes. I don't recall football teams having to solicit money for trips. New stuff for the weight room, sure, but the basics are taken care of.

Wait, so now we're going from getting shot to someone being rude? The people who don't like solicitors generally post a sign, and/or just plain don't answer for anyone.

No, I can't guarantee anything. Ever. At all.

What I can guarantee is that there's at least someone who will threaten ANYONE who comes begging. At least one in Akron's far south, housing a good 35-50k.

The child whose ordeal started this discussion didn't get shot; he got shot at. No harm, no foul?

    I do that.

The people who don't like Black solicitors may or may not be honest enough to advertise it.

    Well, there you go.

    I'll quote myself.
Maybe it will be more easy to understand the second time.

    Come on.

Silly me thinking the conversation had moved on to another phase.

That applies to literally all cases for any combination of skin hues.

Yes. Human behavior is variable enough for there to be a non-zero chance of just about anything you can imagine.

Instead of quoting myself, I'll just write it again.

Things are different when you're an acknowledged target instead of a potential one. Black folks may shoot you for clapping on every beat, but the chances are better that we'll just give you your directions to the beach.

I am Trevor To The Beach
Please put me back on the highway

Then it's best for Black children not to go d-t-d with band candy.

    Cool story?

Yet they do, and we manage not to have anyone getting shot (for that), and they keep coming back. Weird.
