Yep. It is not just a money grab, although that is part of it. It is also a recognition that the times really have changed. Republicans could war against drugs when the users were California hippies and ethnics in the hood. Now that the users are nice white rural boys, they gotta take a different approach.
The weekend before the last presidential election my wife was a bit concerned when I put a Gary Johnson for President sign outside our house. She was afraid our friends and neighbors would think I was selling pot (in reality I have never even tried it). I had the recent conversation with my older son Me: you know I support drug legalization right? Him: yes dad. Me: good but you know if I catch you smoking pot while living in this house I will still break your legs. Him: yes dad. I know that.
This is a silly comment. When were white rural boys not doing drugs? If anything the drug war oniyvbegan in earnest under Nixon when it was realized that drugs were leaving the poor (many of whom were white - my mom said the Italian poor neighborhood where she grew up in the 1940s had drug users) and started effecting the middle class. It is a money grab sure. So what? Legalize it, tax it (but not too much so as not to create a black market like we do for liquor and cigarettes) and regulate it (but not too much to drive things underground). I would rather have the tax revenue and harm the gangs who use drugs as a major source of income.
Just another reminder of the Democratic Party train wreck of 2016. This was such a simple gimme issue. A total no brainer. Any pollster could have told you that support for legalization was easily over 60%. But when the question came up in the primary, Hillary said we needed more research. FFS she got beaten to the punch by John f***ing Boehner. The margins were so small in the end that this issue alone could have made the 75,000 vote difference. What a monumental own goal. One of many.
Hillary's instinct is to avoid saying something that might hurt her. Play her cards close to the vest. Don't leave an opening. None of which availed her. The right was always going to find issues on which to bash her. If not on marijuana, or on the military, then on EMAILS! and on the Clinton Foundation. So yeah, she might as well have stood up for weed. She was going to be savaged anyway, so get savaged on an issue that is actually an issue -- and where most people agree with you.
Well ... poo! Using the Peter's Projection Map proposed by "The Society For Social Equality" I must have gotten a bit confused. I'm a senior so I should be all;owed to be a bit off! {on my numbers, that is!]
Taco pizza? Please stop appropriating my culture. Also I am triggered by your use of the word Godfather to refer to my people.
