Just watched Portugal vs Russia. Ronaldo scored in the 9th minute, and then Portugal put 10 men behind the ball and rarely try to go for goal again. Has anyone followed them since last years Euro's. Is this their style now? It was infinitely worse than anything I saw then and this is the Confed Cup where you eff around with lineups, tactics, formations but they seem content to just double down and do the 1-0 thing these days. I didn't see the Mexico game though, so no idea if it was just this game or their preferred style now.
I didn't watch the Mexico game either, but their coach Fernando Santos has built his reputation on building sides with defensive solidity, especially during his time in Greece. Since it worked for them in the Euros, I won't be surprised if they stick with this style until it no longer works.
It's just after Ronaldo scored, he never really tried to again, neither did the rest of the team seem to care about scoring and Russia looked pretty useless. Portuguese midfielders kept kicking the ball up field hoping it would land near Ronaldo and that was the rest of the games plan.
Was that not their style in the euros? They've got some very good footballers but they just setup to do as little as possible and get the win. It works but it would be nice to see a side with that much ability be a little more progressive.
