  1. Think the France match was a real energy drainer.
Still an achievement to get the Germans tired with that slow pace to hit them in the last ten minutes.

I just watch some highlights. Just like the first match, Germany wasted many chances that could have put the game away. We did not deserve the 3 points today but definitely the 1 point for determination. What a comeback! We are far ahead in the rebuild than I thought. It looks like Portugal will host (am I right?). If that is true, it is better to draw against England or Switzerland for SF. Who could have thought that France, Belgium, Croatia, Germany and Italy (maybe not) did not make it but England and 3 small nations of Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland?

The first goal was save-able... Looked like Cillessen was caught off guard, and a split second off in timing his stretch. Definitely could have done better. The second goal was always difficult, deflection indeed made it tricky.

Nevertheless, we need Cillessen plays week-in and week-out. He should force for a loan this winter break, if he can't transfer out. It's unthinkable that the no. 1 GK in one of the top national teams is a bench-warmer at a club level.

In terms of the finals would have to say that portugal as hosts are favourites (with Ronaldo back) closely followed by England (due to their pace all over the pitch but weak midfield) but we do have a decent chance over there

Here is the note that put vDijk up top as striker. It wasnt Koeman, it was vWonderen who wrote it.

Foreign media has called it a masterpiece move

  11. They go ovrer the moon with that kind of things. Remember they practically dedicated football tv shows to van Gaal subbing in another goalie for the penalty shoot out.

quite right. This is common strategy in big games where a goal is needed at the end of the match. Frank de Boer frequently moved van der Hoorn up front late in matches in a similar strategy. Koeman's move was obvious. Let's not forget that it was Vilhena's excellent cross to the middle that made the final goal possible.

ESPN has nice highlights of the goals from yesterday. I've looked at the two German goals. On the first goal Werner is just in too much open space and it was really a great pass from Gnabery that put him in. Cillessen takes a half step to his left which left him short when he tried to dive to the right to make the save. It looke like de Ligt was too far over to the right and he should have been closer to Werner where he might have had a chance to intervene.

On the second goal there were two great plays, the pass from Kroos and then Sane's effort in bringing the ball down and spinning around de Ligt for the shot. We don't know if Cillessen saves the shot if it does not deflect off Tete. Teams often try to go over the top and usually do not succeed as defenders are close to the forward. In this case Sane was between Tete and de Ligt and neither were close enough to interfere with the pass. This was a great offensive play but probably de Ligt should have been a little more to the right.

As I noted previously the match with France on Friday took a lot out of the team and maybe with an additional day of rest they would have been able to pressure the ball in the same way they did in the previous match. It's difficult to expect a team to play at a high level against top flight opponents with only two days of rest.

the Nations League final round should be interesting with two surprise teams, the Swiss and the Dutch. Maybe England are the favorites but any of the four can win it.

  14. The Germans had an extra day rest. It is amazing we did get them tired with our slow 80 minutes game. Particularly Sane, who's in a high octane EPL, had to be taken out as he was from about minute 60 drained. How did he manage to get so tired in that geriatric paced 60 minutes?

Good question. It's not like Germany was using a high press. The forwards only occasionally tried to pressure the back four preferring to drop to the mid line and clog the MF with the three forwards and two MFs. This was a problem that Koeman's team did not solve and one can expect teams capable of playing a 3-4-3 to use this type of formation in the future (but only if they have two good wingbacks as it doesn't work without them).

  16. A German explained that when Gnaby or however his name is, was taken off, Sane was useless. He wasnot tired, but had no clue what to do.

  18. See also the analysis from the article I posted.
I think the real problem was we didnot have Dumfries to bulldozer up and down the right flank. It was there the Germans unfolded most of their dangerous activities as Tete wasnot a threat to be more carefull on that side.

  19. Nice addition to my posted article.
The main concern that caused the German dominance was that Löw understood very well that Tete was the weak point.
I think it would have been solved better by playing 3-4-3 with Vilhena extra in the midfield instead of Tete.

What do you think about the match Germany - Netherlands 2-2.
Do you think that Germany prefers more Netherlands in the final four, than France.
Both consider France as their historic enemy, situation in Belgium, divided Dutch and French people.
Germany played well, but after their second goal, they vanished and step by step the Netherlands scored two goals in five minutes.
Nice to see Netherlands back, I would like that you win this first edition, since you never had luck at World Cups.:)

Euro 2020 pot confirmed. Germany dropped to Pot 2, that means Oranje could be drawn with them again. That scenario, plus Turkey/Ireland and Hungary/Romania from pots 3 and 4, respectively would set up a somewhat "hellish" group. But not that Koeman and the boys couldn't handle it… ;)

    UEFA Nations League pot (4)
    : Switzerland*, Portugal*, Netherlands*, England*

Pot 1 (6): Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Poland

Pot 2 (10): Germany, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Ukraine*, Denmark*, Sweden*, Russia, Austria, Wales, Czech Republic

Pot 3 (10): Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland*, Norway*, Serbia*, Finland*, Bulgaria, Israel

Pot 4 (10): Hungary, Romania, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Georgia*

Pot 5 (10): FYR Macedonia*, Kosovo*, Belarus*, Luxembourg, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Gibraltar, Faroe Islands

Pot 6 (5): Latvia, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Malta, San Marino
