I never thought I'd say this, but if we lose Fellaini now we're ********ed. Recall AP now and maybe even TFM.
Was fearing for Fellaini's ankle originally, but unfortunately, this is no surprise considering the state of that pitch. I guess Martinez felt he had to start Fellaini, with Witsel suspended for this game. Just very disappointing because we'll be left in a serious pickle if he's out long term. The rest of the month alone, United have 6 games to deal with. I guess we can be relieved that Jose did not use Herrera much so far, so he should be fresh and raring to go, but the workload on him is going to be very heavy.
So now all we have is 3 defensive mids. Matic, Herrera and Carrick? We definitely needed more transfers.
It's easy to say that now after both Pogba and Fellaini have gone down. Which CM worth a salt could we have gotten as a 3-4th option? The options available to us at the start of the season are exactly why AP (and even Timmy to a lesser extent) have gone out on loan in the first place. Let's hope that players can be recalled outside of the official windows. I guess we still have McTominay possibly available as well, who's an unknown right now at best...
You can recall players from loans at any time. Usually there are penalties in place that we'd have to pay for recalling him before the loan ends but I can't imagine it's that steep of a fee.
the odds of getting (a) good enough midfielder(s) in in Jan are pretty remote. we will most likely have to make do

I know you've mentioned this before, but I still question how it could have happened in reality. We've had CMs at the club at the moment (Herrera and Carrick before he got hurt) who have hardly seen the pitch. And again, AP chose to leave, expecting he woud not see much time himself. The point remains that we had the numbers in midfield prior to the start of the season and it's hard to conceive that didn't have the depth (even if one wants to question the quality). If we are indeed looking at long term absences for both Pogba and Fellaini both, then it would make sense to try and dip into the market in January, even if AP s recalled.
No it doesn't. Even as longer term injuries, both should be back by January. Unless it's an ACL tear. Pogba will be back though. The issue is between now and January.
I fully expect Pogba to return as well, but if Fellaini is a long term injury himself, then I believe it would make sense then to try and go for another CM in January (even with Herrera there and AP recalled), from a numbers (and also an experience) perspective. Perfectly aware that the issue is right now, until the end of the year, which is precisely why I mentioned that we have to hope that AP can be recalled, McTominay can step up and of course Pogs to not be out too much longer...
It's pointless to go in for an overpriced CM in January if were recalling AP. Just play the kid. He would take Fellaini's minutes. We have enough at that stage in terms of bodies.
McTominay may get some bench time and even some playing time. Carrick was out injured recently too I thought. If Herrera or Matic breaks down we are fxxxxd.
Losing just about anyone else in midfield would just be very cruel at this juncture. Very curious as to how long Carrick will be out: Jose intimated it was some type of knock, which implies something not too serious. Matic was one I was already concerned with, in terms of his workload. But worst comes to worst, Tuanzebe can fill in for him as well, if necessary.
Crap timing too - Fellaini as an outball was very usefull before at Anfield against the press. Plus him against Liverpool defense at set-pieces would have been fun too.
Completely agree that for this game vs Pool, Fellaini is going to be a big loss. Was feeling pretty confident in a midfield 3 of him, Herrera and Matic against any combo they could throw at us. The dead balls and/or him being at the end of crosses from AY at the far post were just the cherry on top tbh. I'm wondering now if Lingard would not be the guy to replace him for this game (as the most advanced guy in the midfield trio). He may be lightweight physically, but his movement and energy could be of some help in applying some pressure and break up the press as well. That injury is just a real bummer...
for now we have to hope the injury isn't as bad as first feared. the ankle thing was thought to possibly be a midterm length injury with the achilles at first too but it actually wasn't a that bad. time will tell. even if he misses the game we still should have a height advantage overall on set plays
We need another midfielder anyway, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is perfect, he can play Pogba Herrera and Matic roles and is over 6 ft.
Fellaini will only be out for 2-3wks with a knee sprain. www.skysports.com/football/news/11667/11072305/marouane-fellaini-avoids-serious-injury-after-scan-reveals-knee-sprain
It certainly comes as a relief that Fellaini will not be a long term absentee. He will still miss some pretty important games for United: Pool, Spurs, Benfica and possibly Chelsea. As mentioned yesterday, the fact that Herrera has hardly been used so far turns out to be a blessing by the looks of it.
