Very happy the rest of the country is getting to enjoy the Earnie Stewart Experience. Add Bradley and Ramos to this list, per @ByDougMcIntyre (https://t.co/44YWhAv6Bt)What are we doing???https://t.co/44YWhAv6Bt— Seth Vertelney (@svertelney) October 26, 2018
In a sardonic way, yeah, but I also want the USMNT to succeed, so hopefully it his Reign of Error doesn't last long before he moves on to greener pastures.
Not that it makes a difference since we have Blake anyway, but can anyone give me the short version of how the Union weren't the ones to have Discovery Rights on Zack Steffan?
They never made a bonafide contract offer to him. Nick Sak and company believed that he was heading to Europe, and because they had MacMath, Blake, and were in talks with M'Bohli, Steffen would have been surplus.
So, in MLS terms, that meant we lost the claim of "discovery" to whomever else wanted to claim him when he came back?
The Union didn't have any home grown player rights to Steffen so he was thrown into the free agent player pool when he decided that he wanted to come home from Germany. Columbus put a "Discovery Claim" on him, so they had first rights to negotiate a contract with him. Had the Nick Sak lead FO had the foresight, they would have at least made a contract offer to Steffen. At worst they would have been able to get some Garber Bucks or possibly a draft pick for the rights to Steffen then when/if he decided to return. At best, they could have signed him. Blake is clearly one of the best keepers in the league. That said.....imagine the Union being able to flip him for profit, after signing Steffen? Peter Vermes has done this exact thing with Josh Sargent. SKC holds his MLS rights because they made a bonafide contract offer to him, and claimed him as a home grown player since Sargent played for an affiliated club team. If Sargent flames out in Germany (not looking likely) and decided to come back to the US....SKC has first crack at signing him.
Familiarity with weird MLS roster rules...check! History of working with young players...check! Championships on his resume...check! Ties to the Union organization...check! Willing to work for cheap...check! Ladies and gentlemen, the product of our global search...your new manager of the Philadelphia Union, John Hackworth!
So with Cincy moving to MLS Louisville looks to be the USL team former players and coaches will sign with.

10 million for Steffen! That academy is finally paying off! https://theathletic.com/677178/2018/11/26/zack-steffen-manchester-city-transfer-columbus-crew-mls/
I dont think a team would take Blake for that much, but why hasn't he been sold overseas yet? Is it because of Visa issues?
