Credit to @Peretz48 for the spot: Nick was spotted while playing for the US National team by a scout from Manchester United and was invited to try out for the prestigeous franchise. The tryout is October 5th and will last ten days in London. http://www.nbc12.com/Global/story.asp?S=23509989 He's a well-known national-level player who has been a mainstay in YNT pools. http://www.wralsportsfan.com/railhawks-provide-next-step-for-taitague-s-promising-future/15684803/ U18 forward Nick Taitague('99), who signed a short term deal with NASL side Carolina in April keeping him there through June, will head to Germany and Spain this summer for trials according to the above interview. Snip: "Taitague is slated to remain with the RailHawks through the end of its NASL spring season in June. He’ll then commence a series of trials and training in Germany and possibly Spain as a prelude to beginning his professional playing career when he turns 18 in February 2017. But he and the RailHawks are already discussing ways for him to possibly return to the club throughout the remainder of the 2016 regular season. “He has some other obligations with a team in Germany that he’s been over there and worked with,” Clarke said. “But they can’t do anything until he turns 18. Hopefully we’ll be able to work it out where he spends more time here than there during the fall season.”" He's already made his pro debut with the RailHawks and is one of the top players in the '99 pool
I cannot say that this is anywhere near correct, but announcers at games here have been saying TATT-i-gway
I don't know. I looked on a couple of ancestry cites, and it is indeed a Guamanian surname. 53% of folks with that surname are in the US mainland, 38% in Guam according to Ancestry.com. Very few people scattered around in the rest of the world with that name. I presumably have been pronouncing it incorrectly in my head for years.
So I asked my Guamanian friend, my only one (cute girl. Super chill, I love her she's great). She said "lol, that's my cousins last name, it's like 'Tie Tag Wee'" So there you go.
Tie? That certainly is a tongue twister with my verbal skills. I'm still going with Ta-Tag-Wee. If I say it really fast no one will ever know. In reality I don't think I will be ever publically talking about a 17 yr old academy player at Schalke.
I looked up Chamorro and it has a six vowel phonemes - FYI English dialects have 11 or more - so pronunciation is pretty close to what was posted above. Should be tie-TAH-gweh. It might be tie-TAH-ghe if they follow the Spanish pronunciation rules which is plausible since they were a Spanish port and then colony for about 400 years.
Acutally, his would probably be one of the few Guamanian names on the Guam national team. Ryan Guy, who I thought was Irish, plays for Guam.
The link below shows a reporter that pronounces his name, I won't even try to type it out. Vid also shows a highlight of a great goal he scored. He's the American Messi! Kidding. Sort of. http://abc11.com/sports/skys-the-limit-for-railhawks-17-year-old-phenom-/1360119/
Confirmation that Schalke plans on signing him: http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/201...n-robben-mexico-weston-mckennie-nick-taitague Schalke has also had 17-year-old midfielder Nick Taitague (pronounced tie-ta-gwee) on trial, and Ruhnert said Schalke plans to offer Taitague a contract once he turns 18 in February.
