Welcome news. I'm afraid the importance of this post makes the previous few look positively trivial.

    also from the guardian:
"Nike and Adidas have launched separate World Cup kits for the women’s national team’s they sponsor for the first time in history. In a week when Gatorade announced a deal with Manchester City women, Lucozade and Budweiser with the Lionesses and Nike a matchball deal with Uefa, evidence that there is a market for women’s football has never been so strong."

    not apparently in the u.s.

countries with a heavy headstart in soccer culture will pass us by in woso very quickly if we stand still.

For a walk down WWC-memory lane, the 2019 International Champions Cup announcement (existing thread on that here) was followed by a panel discussion from members of the 1999 WWC team (Brandi Chastain, Briana Scurry, Michelle Akers, Kristine Lilly, Kate Markgraf, and Shannon MacMillan). Jump to about 54:30 for the panel discussion, which was hosted by Heather O'Reilly:

At the time of WWC 1999 I wasn't really following women's football yet. I mean, I was following it from time to time, and I was of course aware of USWNT's win, but I wasn't watching everything not even closer to how accurately I do today and I didn't know the players very well, they were just little more than names and faces to me. Also, I am not American, so I wasn't so involved with 1999 US win.

I found the conversation O' Reilly had with the '99ers really interesting and insightful. I didn't know those players so much (although I knew some of them better than others, because they kept being around in the women's football world, for instance Margraf with matches-comments). I found Michelle Akers funny and humurous (a side of her I didn't know) and I liked to know about many little stories I wasn't aware of because I didn't follow women's football closely enough at the time (for instance Kate Sobrero/Markgraf's bet that had her dye her hair for the final).

Briana Scurry was very bold to point out at GK position in current USWNT, but I guess she's right: this is a crucial point for the 2019 team. Just out of curiosity: her team-mates, of course, (Brandi Chastain in particular) feel like she's the greatest GK who wore USWNT jersey; is there general consensus about that? How many, in the USA, feel like Hope Solo was better than her? How Scurry and Solo use to be compared to each other?

All in all, a great video!

Uh, I don't think you know the kind of discussion you're starting. I'll just say that there is not a consensus, but I think the general leaning would be in favor of Solo, especially after 2015.

I'll also point you towards these threads where there's some discussion of the "best" including Solo vs Scurry: http://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/us...at-the-end-of-the-year.1997920/#post-29200660

I wasn't sure whether to put this in NWSL or here, but an interesting article on Morgan Brian and her injuries: https://equalizersoccer.com/2019/03...l-ups-chicago-red-stars-rory-dames-interview/

Apparently Brian pulled herself out from consideration for SheBelieves to figure out what is going on health wise, and it was not a coaching decision. Also a few weeks ago, according to Dames, there has been some sort of new diagnosis of an underlying issue that she's had the past couple of years, and she's making progress. We'll see. In any case, it doesn't leave a lot of time for her to make it back healthy and into contention for the WWC roster though.

I couldn't wrap my head around the triple negative:
"But I don’t think anybody doesn’t believe that something’s not wrong." -- Rory Dames

IMG_0334.jpg Ah I remember Lorrie Fair, arguably the least known of the 99er's team and besides Tasha Kai, one of the few Asian Americans that made it on the senior squad.

Also, are those USWNT clear tote bags on sale anywhere?

I think that 1999 trophy ended up outside where us mere mortals had to stand in line for a photograph as shown in the above photograph I took of the outdoor festivities.

17 years ago, I may have made a scene at our office in Dallas when I discovered that one of our Executive Assistants was Lorrie Fair’s Aunt.

There's just something cringingly unrealistic and melodramatic about the shot of the whole team running down length of the field in a line. Fox did the same thing four years ago toward the end of the commercial; looks like they're doubling down on it.
