Michelle Yeoh will play Captain Georgiou, of the Starship Shenzhou. In addition, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp were also officials unveiled today as Lt. Saru and Lt. Stamets respectively. Lt. Saru is a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Trek universe. Lt. Stamets, an “astromycologist,” fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. Lt. Stamets is the new gay character. http://www.ew.com/article/2016/11/29/star-trek-discovery-cast-gay
Hmm. I can't imagine two science officers being part of the main cast, and a fungus expert is so specific, that my guess is Rapp's character will be a supporting part only. Of course, every time he's on screen I'm going to get this song stuck in my head...
Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as the lead in Star Trek: Discovery. She's going to play the lieutenant commander.
Discovery was delayed again... http://tvline.com/2017/01/18/star-trek-discovery-delayed-premiere-date-cbs-all-access/ Next thing you know we'll be hearing Bones saying, "it's dead Jim" And in other Discover news, they also announced that they've cast Sarek http://tvline.com/2017/01/18/star-trek-discovery-james-frain-spocks-father-dad/
Trying to remember if alternate universe Spock is capable of lying before I decide whether to believe this post or not....

Rainn Wilson joins the cast as.... Harry Mudd???? How? More importantly, why? http://www.startrek.com/article/rainn-wilson-his-name-is-mudd-on-discovery
in Star Trek or others in general? I'd say Lost or ER were among the most diverse shows in recent memory. Large casts though. I would have liked to see Asian female captain/Black female XO rather than White male captain/Black female XO though the actor chosen for the captain is amazing. I do wonder if we might get some foreign accents for any of the human characters. Or will they all sound American?
Well we do have Michelle Yeoh playing a Captain with Sonequa Martin-Green as an XO. Yeah has a foreign accent when she speaks English so it's a safe bet you'll hear it on the show. Granted they're on two separate ships, but if you look at the cast for both ships you have a Chinese woman, a person of Indian descent, a person of Pakistani descent, and another African American. I think that's more diverse than other Star Trek series.
