Nelson has to change his last name to Ramirez to play in Portugal

He's got to at least speak spanish fluently or he won't understand anyone on his team

    How true, how true

His plea leads me to ask whether it's time for a cap on foreign players?

    Pros?
    -foster chop talent

    Cons?
-teams can't dip into the south american talent pool for cheap talent that make them more competitive

I don't know if you guys had seen this note from EFE, but buried inside is a slight blow at Benfica, Porto, Sporting Lisbon for not giving opportunities to these players.

I mean, look at Porto signing James Rodriguez and Juan Iturbe but giving blind eye to local players. Seems easier to take local players, that you do not have to worry about uprooting/adapting to new environment.

Look at clubs like Santos in Brazil and Chivas in Mexico and how they have grown by relying on their youth teams and players.

You mean the same Nelson Oliveira will start sulking if he becomes a top player for a Portuguese club and starts receiving offers from foreign clubs?

Heck, some of the guys in that team decided to leave Portugal even before signing a professional contract.

Clubs should look for the best talent available within their budgetary limits with no regards whatsoever for the players nationality - that's what players do too. Protectionism doesn't work, it incentivates mediocrity.

And quality portuguese players will always have a spot.

Touché. Players are the first to want to go when they have an opportunity. If teams have an opportunity to get cheap talents in S.A. it means Portuguese players are overpriced.

Sporting still has a decent amount of portuguese players, too bad we dont have more cause no matter who we sign they usually turn out to be garbage even if it semes like a good idea

Why its admirable, its a free market. True talent will shine though. I am sure Oliviera will get his chance as will Roderick @ Benfica.
Undeniable talent will always have a spot on a Portuguese roster.
