Mirjalal Kasymov resigned as Uzbekistan coach on Tuesday following their 4-2 loss to North Korea in their opening World Cup qualifier a week ago with Pakhtakor Tashkent boss Samvel Babayan replacing him.

Bakhtiyor Ashurmatov also stepped down as coach of the under-23 side with Viktor Jalilov taking over, the Uzbekistan Football Federation said.

Babayan led Pakhtakor to their 10th Uzbek title last year after going through the campaign unbeaten with the club on course to defend the title as they sit top coming up to the halfway point.

He will be tasked with steering Uzbekistan to top spot in Group H, which also features Philippines, Bahrain and Yemen, to ensure they take part in the third stage of Asian qualifying for Russia 2018. Their next fixture is at home to Yemen in September.

Kasymov had come so close to leading the Uzbeks to a first World Cup last time around, just being pipped on goal difference by South Korea for a place in Brazil last year.

But poor recent form following the 2-0 extra time loss to South Korea in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup in January ended his second spell in charge.

The Uzbeks were beaten 5-1 in a March friendly by Japan, lost another 1-0 at home to Iran earlier this month and were 4-0 down to North Korea after 36 minutes of their Group H opener last Tuesday in Pyongyang before the central Asians rallied.

Something tell's me they will turn to him again one day.

I wonder about Uzbekistan though. They do always seem to want to appoint a local coach or at least someone in the old Uzbek school of thought. In fact most of the Central Asian nations do....why is this? They appear to want to close ranks with anyone that might be slight out of their region.

Yes. Good choice. He is a experienced coach and was team advisor during Radhi Shnaishel's tenure in Australia 2015.

Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has said that the current assistant coach of Maldives national team, Ismail Mahfooz (Imma) will lead the Maldives against China in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier next month.“In the matcha gainst China, Imma will lead the national team and we are working to appoint a coach for the national team as soon as possible.” Normalization committee chairman Mohamed Shaweed said.“We have discussed the issue in our technical committee and they don’t want to bring a coach just to fill the post soon. They want a reputed high profile coach with a good CV and as you all know it would be very difficult for us to bring such a coach for a long term period. So we will bring a coach for a short term basis. Our main target is to win the SAFF Championship.”Shaweed also said that even if the appoint a coach for the national team before the match against China, Imma will lead the team. -

Sounds like Maldive's player Ali Ashfaq doesn't agree with this change:

Australia's Asian Cup winning coach Ange Postecoglou is headlining the opening day of the first Asian Football Confederation (AFC) National Coaches Conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Postecoglou will share the strategy that helped the Socceroos' win their first major silverware at January's tournament on home soil, as they defeated South Korea in the final.

The three-day conference is the idea of AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh, who moved to the Asian governing body in March, having previously held a similar position with UEFA for 18 years.

The conference includes most of Asia's technical directors and national coaches including Alain Perrin (China), Vahid Halilhodzic (Japan), Paul Le Guen (Oman), Thomas Dooley (Philippines), Bernd Stange (Singapore) and Dollah Salleh (Malaysia).

Former France and Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is expected to appear in Wednesday's sessions of the conference.

In his keynote presentation, called "Bridging the Gap", former Scotland head coach Roxbrugh urged Asian coaches to work together to catch up to the dominant nations of Europe and South America.

"As Uli Stielike, Korea Republic's head coach has noted, there is a lot of rivalry in Asia and we are observing each other, while in football development, the gap gets bigger and bigger with countries such as Germany and Spain," Roxburgh said.

"Success in football can happen through chance or design, but I prefer design. The four main elements that will create success in Asia, I believe, are coach education, player development, technical exchange and intense competition."

Asia has only one nation -- 41st ranked Iran -- in the top 50 of the FIFA rankings. Ten AFC countries - South Korea (54th) Japan (56th) Australia (61st) UAE (70th), China (79th) Iraq (85th), Saudi Arabia (93rd), Qatar (95th), Oman (99th) -- are in the top 100. None of Asia's four representatives won a game at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But Roxburgh urged AFC nations to stay upbeat when it comes to getting more competitive on the international stage. "There are many positives in Asian football and reasons for optimism," Roxburgh said. "As Australia forward Tim Cahill put it so well: 'Asia has improved, the force is happening here. Asia is at the forefront of football'."

Apart from Houllier, who won 10 major club trophies as coach in England and France, another special guest at the conference at the JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur will be Iran coach Carlos Queiroz, who was formerly Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United.

KUALA LUMPUR: National youth coach Ong Kim Swee has been placed in temporary charge of the national team for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) moved quickly to install Ong in the hot seat following Dollah Salleh's decision to quit after the 10-0 thrashing by the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Newly appointed head coach of Maldives, Ricki Lloyd Herbert from New Zealand has joined with the team tonight in Shanyang, China.

Herbert travelled to China from his native country New Zealand to join the team and will travel to Maldives with the team after the match against China.

According to Football Association of Maldives, caretaker coach Ismail Mahfooz will lead the team tomorrow night against China in the FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Shenyang, China.

The appointment came after the resignation of Bulgarian born Velizar Popov just after six months.

FAM’s normalization committee chairman Mohamed Shaweed has said before that they will bring a high profile coach who has worked with a team in the FIFA World Cup.

Herbert is the only New Zealander and second manager to take New Zealand to the FIFA World Cup for a second time when his side qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Herbert led the New Zealand national football team to the victory in the 2008 OFC Nations Cup, qualifying for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.

On 15 June 2010, New Zealand drew 1–1 with Slovakia in their opening match in the World Cup Finals. In New Zealand's second game in the tournament, they held reigning world champions Italy to a memorable draw. Their third game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup was against Paraguay and the outcome was a nil-all draw.

There are number of reasons, but the main one is that Uzbekistan Football Federation doesn't want to waste big money for famous foreign specialists as we have bad experience related to Scolari, Zico which once trained Bunyodkor but did'nt reach serious results, and also a bit sense of national pride which makes them appoint Uzbekistani specialists even with Armenian roots

The Myanmar Football Federation have parted ways with Serbian coach Raddy Avramovic and elevated German Gerd Zeise from coach of the U19/U20s squads to place him in charge of the nation’s senior squad.

A statement made by the Myanmar Football Federation on October 18 said the decision had been made “so Myanmar could win international matches in the future and produce better football players”.

Just realized something funny but I used to know this guy... went to school with his son Ivan back in Oman in the early 90s. We were on our school's football team back then - I knew Ivan's dad did something football related but seeing now it was Oman U-23s team he coached. I see he even made the wiki page lol... "They have a son, Ivan, who graduated with a master's degree in media studies from Coventry University." Meh, nothing about high school in Oman though....

The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) dismissed Slaven Skeledzic as the national football team coach, nearly nine months after he was appointed to coach the Afghan team.
The AFF said in a statement that the decision was taken following weak performance by the national team recently by achieving weak outcomes due to the weakness of the technical staff of the team.
