I wonder if the name will be announced tommorow? Anyway, it's going to be "The Utah Gulls" 5/4 odds in Vegas..
From the rumblings I've heard from the Checketts camp, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually do go with Salt Lake City FC.
So what should the name be? Here's to helping Checketts out Seriously, there have been a bunch of good suggestions put out in various threads. Here's a few I found off hand. Which should the Utah team be named?
Great Salt Lake Never happen, but at least it's original. Well, maybe. I haven't read all the other threads yet. Other then that I like Utah Saints. Pioneers or Sting work as well.
Re: So what should the name be? ==================================== the two "name the team" threads have been merged =====================================
I was listening to 1280 AM about an hour ago, and Craig Bolerjack was interviewing Dave Checketts. When Boler asked Checketts what the name of the team will be, he replied that the name will be revealed in 3 weeks and he will guarantee that it will not have zz, will not be pioneers, brine shrimp etc., and it will have an "international" flavor. Here's hoping that FC will be in the name.
Re: So what should the name be? Salt Lake Bears was another name I saw thrown out. Any obscure/specific names for local types of native big cats, bears, or other large/wild animal out there (ie Grizzlies, Cougars, etc) that aren't being used?
I think it's about time we go with a state bird nickname, I'd rather see MLS go in the direction of state/local heritage over a phony "FC" which means nothing and sounds dumb. So I'll vote for "Gulls"...besides the supporter club could then sing that catchy Flock of Seagulls song... The gull is considered the state bird of Utah by common consent, probably in commemoration of the fact that these gulls saved the people of the State by eating up the Rocky mountain crickets which were destroying the crops in 1848. Orson F. Whitney says that in the midst of the devastation of the crickets, "when it seemed that nothing could stay the devastation, great flocks of gulls appeared, filling the air with their white wings and plaintive cries, and settled down upon the half-ruined fields. fields. All day long they gorged themselves, and when full, disgorged and feasted again, the white gulls upon the black crickets, list hosts of heaven and hell contending, until the pests were vanquished and the people were saved." After devouring the crickets, the gulls returned "to the lake islands whence they came." http://pioneer.utah.gov/gull.html
Yeah well if you had read a little of just about any of the other threads around here, you'd find out that Saints won't work for other reasons and also that Checketts has already vetoed it several times over.
What's wrong with leaving out all the fluff and calling the team Salt Lake City Football/Soccer Club? "FC" isn't phony.
I'm putting in yet another entry for Sacred Shortzz. Actually there is a double z name that makes sense: The Buzz (For the Beehive State!) I could also see Utah <year>ers - with the year either being the year Utah was made a state or when Brigham Young rolled into the area.
