While newtex is right - the series is all tied up - this last week was very bad for the East.

The East gave up two home games, and one - the DC United loss - erased the East's goal-difference lead altogether and now the East is four goals behind. The West has a home PPG of 2.29 (from seven games), compared to the 1.92 PPG of the East. With games in hand, the West stands a very good chance of retaking the title if they continue to eke out just a few more wins in away stadia.

    Some interesting tidbits:

    1) The East's woes may be worsened due to the fact that Atlanta (12th East) has not played a game yet. However, Toronto (2nd East) has also not played an inter-conference game, while Vancouver (11th West) has not played an inter-conference game.

    2) At the other end, some teams are definitely getting their game in. Montreal, Cincinnati, Dallas, and Kansas City have all played three times so far. In Montreal's case, all three have been away games!

    3) With 19 games played, we are in a comparable position to 2017's April 3rd posting of mine (I did not participate in 2018 and do not have the statistics to back it up); at that point, 21 games had been played, and the West had a +5 GD and the East had a +3 lead in points. That it is close now and close then is mostly due to the relatively short sample size, but I think we can also give a hand to the hard-working server at Major League Soccer, who tirelessly computed algorithms to ensure the schedule was as balanced as possible.

The split in the West is pretty amazing with the top AND bottom 4 teams in the league. Kind of distracts from noticing that the West has 7 of the top 11 teams overall.

The week was split with the East hosting every game. It would be good to give the cumulative record at East teams and at West teams every week rather than just the total.

Back from holiday! The last two weeks have, in my mind, helped solidify the West's lead. The teams most hurting the East in its bid for the repeat are about half the Conference: seven teams have lost at home, compared to only two Western teams. Yes, the East has played 21 of the 39 matches, but that's damn near half and they're getting slaughtered: East 1.71 PPG versus West 2.11 PPG. It's just not great. The thirteen-goal deficit is not helping, either.

The West now has the top 5 teams in the league but New England is now breaking up the West also having the bottom 4.

The Galaxy moved up from #4 to #1. Dallas also moved up 3 spots. The biggest move up was NYCFC from #19 to #12.

Columbus dropped all the way from #7 to #13. Cincy dropped from #13 to #19.

It's interesting to me that the Eastern teams seems to splitting games against the West, while Western teams are largely feast-or-famine against the East. There are 5 Western teams with at least 2 more vEast wins than losses, and 2 Western teams with at least 2 more losses than wins, but only 1 such Eastern team (CIN). I want this to explain the big chasm in the West, (i.e. to say the West teams are differentiated mostly by how they play against the East,) but it only does so slightly. We're still in low-data-land, though...

Not really. With 39 games in and 105 to go, there's enough here to start the projections. The East is definitely behind.

Depends entirely on the analysis you're doing. For what I was mentioning above, which is a team-by-team thing, just having 2-4 interconference games (and, in some cases, 5 or fewer intraconference games) per team isn't much to go by.

Besides, I wasn't saying the East wasn't behind by any means. Dunno where you got that from...?

The wins by the top teams in the West against the East are helping the imbalance but those top 5 are mostly beating everyone.

    Ranked by PPG, (W-T-L)

    1. LAG 7-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 against the East
    2. LAX 7-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 against the East
    3. HOU 5-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 against the East
    4. SEA 5-3-1 overall, 3-0-0 against the East
    5. FCD 5-2-2 overall, 1-1-2 against the East

Those five teams have 10 of the 18 wins against the East and only Dallas has lost. But they also have 19 wins against the West and just 6 losses total out of 44 games. Half those six losses have come against each other.

It seems to me that mostly those 5 teams are just better than the rest of the league right now and that shows up in different ways. Things will probably change. Those five teams have all had 5 or 6 home games each so far. Six of the bottom teams in the West have had 24 total home games so far or just 4 apiece. And Portland hasn't had any.

Yeah, that's partially why I was saying earlier that it only slightly explains the big chasm in the West. You also have the struggling COR and SJE whose only points so far have been against Western competition - but even then, it's been mostly against the lower half of the West and not the upper half. And that's not even considering the like of FCD and VAN, which are bucking the "trend".

Weird. From the looks of things, the West has 6 good to excellent teams, and the East has Montreal as the Beasts, given how few they have played at home. But this is not reflected in the record. Whiskey L'Foxtrot? EDIT: I am missing something in all those numbers. What is the W-L-T record of East v. West so far? You are outdoing the AAQ African Swallow vs. Condor etc. etc. etc. for burying the lead

The East is 13-8-18 (W-T-L) against the West after the games of week 9. That is in post #35 of this thread.

And in post #36, the second table breaks that down into Home and Away for each conference (rows 3 & 4, columns 2:7).

The West still has the top 3 spots but things are getting much more scrambled down the table.

Several teams dropped 3 spots this week. The Red Bulls and Portland jumped up 5 spots while Philly went up 4.

There are only 5 teams out of 24 with PPGs between 1.82 and 1.22, not inclusive. That's a pretty sparse gap in the middle of the table. To put that in perspective, half of previous Shield winners had less than 1.82 PPG, and likewise 1.22 PPG hasn't made the playoffs since 2006. Before ATL beat SKC yesterday, it was 4 teams between 1.82 and 1.25, meaning there were three teams in playoff positions (SKC, NYR, and POR) despite those extremely low PPG.

There will be some regression to the mean. I'd guess there will be a lot more teams in that 1.22 to 1.82 zone by the end of the year.
