A few podcasts are saying the tide is turning, I think there is something to this. Toronto, Montreal, Orlando and Columbus seem to be big figures in their markets. And NYCFC and RedBulls, well, they are just such big diverse markets. The Orlando atmosphere on Sunday was great, but so was Portland. As a Rapids fan, I'm jealous of both.

The last few seasons I have focused on home PPG, this season I'd like to switch it up to away points earned, or points "stolen." The West has had four away games, and stolen 2/12 points (16.7% of possible). The East has had six away games, and stolen 5/18 points (27.8%).

In terms of goals, the East has a 4-goal advantage. That's pretty decent, actually. That is largely a function of the Atlanta win over Minnesota yesterday, however, so it remains to be seen whether that lead will stand.

With Minnesota around, the East may well win it (comfortably) this season. :p

The East played three away games and snatched 3/9 points out of it. It would be nice to have a metric that shows the optimal away performance - ideally, if a conference steals 3/9, those points are best accrued via draws instead of a win and two losses.

While the West has more PPG, the East maintains its GPG advantage, 16 goals scored to 13. Again, that is all a function of Atlanta vs. Minnesota.

Next week, as newtex points out, the East hosts all the games. I would be very surprised if the East did not at least temporarily regain the PPG lead, based on the matchups.

Sorry, everything on this thread is filtered through a Western neo-imperialist lens. Resistance is futile.

The conference that won last season is the reference point for this season.

The East has the smallest of edges in overall PPG. But the goals-scored differential is growing rapidly. I imagine that a lot of teams see Minnesota as an opportunity to help get points on the board and break ties for the offseason. The reality is that this season might be our first season (double-check if I'm wrong) where the conference that has the most inter-conference points also scores fewer goals.

That is correct. Traditionally I have posted the overall standings from the perspective of the conference that won the previous year. It only looks like it is always from the West.

Here is an example from 2013 where the East was way behind but since they had won in 2012 they got the "honors".

As newtex said, another drawn week. However, 3/5 games were played in the West, so the East was able to steal 2/9 possible points, whereas the East stole 1/6 possible.

I've written "talbe" twice already, so I'll leave analysis to this: the East still has a goal-differential lead, and a small lead in PPG. But this lead is frail and tenuous - two wins from the West will wipe out the entire lead.

    Interesting stuff as always.

Helpful hint: if you want to avoid the weird thing where the text in the upper left cell of a table doesn't vertically align with the rest of the stuff in the row, don't put a new line after the table] tag.

    e.g.
    table]2017|TOTS|TOTS|TOTS|TOTS|TOTS|TOTS|PTSA
    \2017|TGP.|PTS.|GPG.|PPG.|GAPG|GLFT|2016
    \stuff
    [/table]
    will give you:
    2017TOTSTOTSTOTSTOTSTOTSTOTSPTSA
    2017TGP.PTS.GPG.PPG.GAPGGLFT2016
    stuff
