As a Red Bulls fan, I'll tell you that I was thrilled that New England hired Friedel. I expect a lot of flailing and failing in the next couple of years.
Hey now! The Union have signed some decent players over the years.......Vincent Nogueira, Tranquillo Barnetta, & Bedoya. They just never seem to put all of the pieces together consistently to be in sixth place
This probably doesn't belong here ... but ....someone get Knave. Source: Curt Onalfo interviewed in Mexico with Atlas https://t.co/92Ia8DR4Zl via @Metro_US— Kristian Dyer (@KristianRDyer) January 25, 2018
Well if any American coach has earned an interview in Liga MX, it's clearly Curt Onalfo! "We could see the first-ever American to coach in Mexico." Also the last-ever!
I'm just surprised to see an American coach actually leave the safety of the nest. Most seem to just be content taking an assistant job somewhere or go to the lower leagues for a few years. Good coach or not, I commend him for trying to break the mold.
I theoretically understand what you're saying, but Onalfo played in Mexico, met and married his wife there, and still owns a home there. It's not a huge leap for him, personally.
Random rumor for a team that just hired a coach: https://www.football-italia.net/116267/report-tramezzani-colorado-rapids
That was just after this article came out. But I'd agree, there are more than a couple of his ilk in the league and you almost invariably don't find their teams drawing boatloads of fans.
That article is nearly 4 years old, and the backlash from it was what a lot of people believe was behind the push to get Jermaine Jones. Of course, he single-handedly grabbed the team by the scruff of the neck and brought us to within a goal of an MLS title, Some of us thought that Ebeneezer Kraft had seen the light, looking at the jersey sales and newly created buzz around the team, but the real telling point was whether they would sign another top player in the off-season to make that final missing piece of the puzzle, Instead, Mike Burns admitted that he was "caught off guard" when a starting defender on a low contract with an EU passport, who was now out of contract, decided to triple his salary by signing with a Scandinavian club. We all know how it went from there. Funny thing is, even if that article is almost 4 years old, there is a lot of stuff there that still applies today.
I know he's a GM not a coach, but this interview with Garth Lagerwey is worth listening to... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...rs-gm-german-trials-early-mls-roster-building
I still think Heaps would have made a lot of sense for the Sacramento Republic since Paul Buckle is trash... Former Revs coach Jay Heaps hired as team president, general manager of Birmingham Legion FC
Here's a report from Dutch broadcaster NOS that the Dutch federation (the KNVB) approached Earnie Stewart about becoming the entity's technical director, but he turned them down as he wanted to stay in the United States. https://t.co/t0tH0j01GN— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) January 31, 2018 Smart move by Earnie, only in Philly can he can continue signing guys like Bedoya as DPs and trading for Charlie Davies...
Heaps would have been better off if he had taken a job like Birmingham or Sacramento of anywhere else before landing an MLS coaching gig. Look at Savarese, who is infinitely better prepared as a coach than Heaps was. And while I have been a critic of Heaps and believed he was over his head with the Revs job, he's a good guy and I hope he does well in Birmingham. Many of us in Rev-land thought he'd be better as a GM than a coach.
What does the 2018 MLS Coaching Hot Seat look like? My "most likely to be the first one fired" candidates: 5. DCU - Ben Olsen: He'll make it at least until they open Audi Field in the summer, but only because DC is so cheap. 4. PHI- Jim Curtin: He'd be gone already if Philly wasn't so cheap. 3. LAG- Sigi Schmid: He should have a short leash given the arrival of LAFC and how badly he did in 2016 and 2017. 2. MIN - Adrian Heath: The team hasn't done much to improve, and if they don't win Heath will publicly blast the players as he always does. 1. NER - Brad Friedel: Does this guy have any idea what he's doing? Teams with higher ambitions or antsy owners could give an unexpected quick hook to Jason Kreis, Giovanni Savarese, Remi Garde, or even Bob Bradley, if they were to stumble...
Anyone that puts Brad Friedel on the hot seat has no clue as to what is going on in New England. Brad starts with at least a three year free pass. At least.
5. Curtin: One can only take so much mediocrity for so long. 4. Schmid: LAG needs a quick start and at least a playoff making season in order to not be irrelevant in LA market, considering LAFC is winning the PR battle. 3. Olsen: His DCU legend status and DCU FO incompetence can only shield him for so long, with a new stadium opening. 2. Heath: He sucks. And can the Loons can afford another year of suck? 1. Kreis: He's gotten his chances at Orlando, and if he can't pull a playoffs clinching season, he's done.
Here's the thing: Friedel is a first year coach. He'll get at least to the end of year 2. Curtin is definitely on the hot seat considering they play 5 of their first 7 games at home. If/When the Union stumble out of the gate, he'll likely be gone by the end of April. Kreis should be at the top of the list IMO. With all of the moves they've made this off season it's playoffs or bust for Orlando. Olsen will get until the end of the season. DC has made a lot of nice moves the past 6 months bringing young talent. Young talent takes time to mature and gel. Plus DC is playing a TON of road games until Audi Field opens in July. He'll get until the end of this season. Heath will get this season as well. They're not spending a ton of money in Minny. Also, that team improved a lot in the second half the season. Garde I could see. Saputo has a short leash and expects results. For me Curtin and Kreis have the hot seats, all other coaches are sitting easy at this juncture.
Other than Friedel, this is a pretty good list. The Revs would have to be terrible for that management team to fire a first year coach. Like clearly the worst in the league terrible. He probably doesn't know what he's doing, but he'll have 2-3 years to prove it. Gotta say Kreis is on the list. Not sure where, but he's top five.
Time to resurrect this evergreen tweet: #MNUFC & #NERevs will not succeed while Manny Lagos & Michael Burns, respectively, are in positions of power at the clubs. #MINvSEA #CHIvNE— Ron Waxman 🏳️🌈🇺🇦 (@RonWaxman) August 6, 2017 Manny Lagos says Minnesota roster building process includes one eye on 2019 Manny Lagos continued to preach patience, a virtue that may have to serve those fans even beyond this season. “We’re growing into the cathedral of soccer of Allianz Field in 2019,” Lagos said, “and that starts with us being competitive on the field this year. “We have to be in a roster-building mode, not in a position where we need perfection and winning right now." Lagos insists this year's roster is a deeper one than began Minnesota's inaugural MLS campaign, even if their other offseason acquisitions to date include Mears, their SuperDraft picks, two players acquired by trade – Harrison Heath and Matt Lampson – and a pair of relatively unknown Cameroonians, Franz Pangop and Bertrand Owundi Eko’o. He also says a couple of deals to round out the squad are nearing completion. “We didn’t have depth last year and we need to get better at the bottom of our roster,” Lagos said. ... Toronto, Portland, and Orlando all struggled at first, he said, and have taken time to put together dominant squads through this process.
"We want to follow the same path as an expansion team that was the butt of jokes for almost a decade while consistently failing to make the playoffs, and Orlando City who sucked before they wisened up and fired their crappy coach who we then hired to coach our team."
