From a Laws of the Game standpoint, the referee has the final decision so if he says throw in, that's fine. From a management standpoint, what the ever loving ******** was that?
The linesman clearly called corner but the ref and the Red Bull’s assumed it was a throw because it never looked like a corner. What I don’t understand is why the ref can’t call that back? That was a pretty awful look for the league.
Optics were horrendous. Absolutely terrible, but I have no idea at the moment what actually transpired between the ref and the AR. If the referee clearly and verbally announced the restart was a throw, NYC should look inward for the ultimate blame. If on the other hand, the referee simply signalled a direction, the restart was ambiguous, and you should never allow an ambiguous restart like that. The other question is if the AR did his part by making eye contact with the ref and/or using the radio to inform him of his opinion. You shouldn't just blindly signal, especially if there's a good chance that the ref has a better angle.
********. I've gone back 20 or so pages in the attendance thread to find in May that the tarped sections have changed some even for the Galaxy game and somehow completely forgot the Gold Cup.
The AR had corner from what I've been told. It wasn't a mistaken signal but a disagreement that should have been handled more definitively IMO.
My total guess is the ref didn’t even realize his linesman called corner and just didn’t know how to handle from there.
The communication on that call was very poor. While it is true that the ref has the final say the NYCFC players had clearly seen the AR point to the corner flag, and they reacted as any team would as far as setting up their goal defenders, but with the understanding that time was needed to set the ball at the corner flag, etc. Kelly had a responsibility in overruling the corner to blow a whistle and either he or the AR should then have signalled for the throw in. Additionally, if the AR saw that a quick throw in was being taken he should have taken responsibility for his CK signal and gotten Kelly's attention. I can't blame the Red Bull players, but the ref crew blew it. I don't know what happened after the game, but if I were Torrent steam would be coming out of my ears.

Additionally watch the nyc defender who kicked the ball out, his first inclination was to complain to the ar when he signaled the ck. Center ref correctly overruled the ar and verbally communicated the throw in and nyc was simply caught napping.
You think this was an ordinary situation that is essentially ok? Like a quick restart? Head over to the referee forum and see what they think about it.
Kelly mismanaged the situation and lied to my direct question. https://t.co/jJ3QrMlXPj— Dylan Butler (@Dylan_Butler) July 19, 2019
