I was wondering if it may have been some Mexican -American guy in the stadium who did this on purpose.
It was either the dumbest person, Most ignorant person, On purpose as you suggest, or just an honest mistake. Chile and Uruguay are from the same continent. No one will notice.
Accidentally my ass. That crap was done on purpose. You can't tell me a host city has three to four months knowing who they are going to host, get everything prepared accordingly, including the labeling the six national anthems of the nations they are hosting in the group stage, then all of a sudden someone is going to put the wrong tape in the boom box. No. That was some jackass trying to make a statement that he/she doesn't respect you and doesn't like you Latinos invading his/her state (country). It was just as disrespectful to Mexico as it was to Uruguay, but the jackass couldn't do it to Mexico because there might have been a riot in the streets of Arizona, so he/she had to disrespect the nation of Uruguay to get his/her point across. Let me be the first to apologize to the Uruguayan people and the nation of Uruguay for some bigoted ignorant people that many of us live with here in the United States of America. BTW, to all those who have, are and will downplay this asked yourselves this: How the hell would you feel if the USMNT was being hosted by another country and all of a sudden they played the Russian national anthem "by mistake". It totally ruined the match for me, and I would not hesitate to applaud the Uruguayan team if they decided to boycott the rest of Copa America Centenario.
This is either the best post I have ever read on Bigsoccer. Or the Worst. I am still trying to figure it out.
URU fans upset at wrong anthem tried to tear tifo. We tried to bring it down and they continued to fight. Cont. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/emEeHR3fc7— Pancho Villa's Army™️ (@VillasArmy) June 6, 2016
(2/2) we tried talking to them. Tried calming them down. In the end we called security for everyone's safety. pic.twitter.com/TOdLSpEJeO— Pancho Villa's Army™️ (@VillasArmy) June 6, 2016
Chill out. This has happened all over the world, including S. America. I don't think it was a xenophobic statement.
Yup. In friendlies it happens. Rarely see it in major competitions though. I do remember in the Olympics 4 years ago it happened with North Korea's women's team. They actually protested , went to the locker room and did not go on the field for 20 minutes.
Pretty recently, also happened when Argentina played El Salvador in a friendly, and when it was the turn to hear the ES National anthem, they played the russian one instead. Common issue here : both matches were played in USA....
