This is interesting, I found it it an article about the CONCACAF Champions League: "In light of Mexico's withdrawal from the Copa Libertadores, the Executive Committee directed General Secretary Chuck Blazer to assess the current situation with CONMEBOL competitions to determine whether continued participation by CONCACAF was desirable. He is to evaluate and take the necessary steps to either end the relationship or correct it." http://www.concacaf.com/view_article.aspx?id=4739 Personally, I don't think they have the cojones to tell Mexico or CONMEBOL that CONCACAF teams can't play in CONMEBOL toruneys anymore.
they are sending a secretary to assess the situation?!?!? LOL well I can see how well that's going to go.
Well refering to the Mexican national team qualifying through Conmebol, i'm pretty sure they would take a slot away from Concacaf due to Mexico's absence and give the slot to Conmebol. So it would be 5 direct tickets and a playoff with a North American team. Concacaf go's from a potential of 4 spots to 3 spots. Conmebol would go from 5 potential spots to 6. I don't see why other South American teams not named Argentina or Brazil would mind since, in theory the difficulty of qualifying would remaine the same due to the shifting of openings. This is only thinking logically if hypothetically, the FMF switched federations. I would welcome it. Conmebol and Mexico would be that much more competetive. This of course is all fantasy and reality has Mexico as far as it's ever been from Conmebol.
Grêmio vice-president has said he will discuss with the president about protesting at Conmebol, because we see as a total unfair advantage to São Paulo and Nacional the fact they will be automatically sent to play the quarterfinals! Our position is that they should have gone to play in Mexico, and if not, they should play the clubs qualified in 3rd position from Chivas and San Luis group. (dont know which teams are those... Everton and Lanus?)
for brazilians, argies, mexicans, egyptians and chinese are gringos too. in Brazil GRINGO = FOREIGNER. this obviously disperses that idea about the origin of the word gringo (greens go!, etc) according to Wikipedia, the word gringo comes from GRIEGO (greek) and was used in spain since the beginning of the 19th century to refer to non-spanish speakers. the word was imported into Brazil and here it retains its original meaning (foreigners, non portuguese speakers), while in the rest of latin america, for some reason, it came to apply only to americans. (in Rio Grande do Sul state, people from the countryside, specially of italian descent, are also called gringos)
Tell that to the Japanese: Japanese women's soccer team cancels trip to the USA due to swine flu http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_y...7YF?slug=ap-swineflu-sports&prov=ap&type=lgns
I thought the biggest day in Mexican soccer history was the time when Chivas beat Boca in Guadalajara.
according to ESPN Deportes, liga de quito also blamed the flu and called off traveling to NY for a friendly against the All Stars of World Hope or some shit.... i also agree. this whole situation has been blown way out of proportion.
I just came back from houston, lots of mexican cars sport mexican tags there......o boy.... does mean I can not travel around safe? in any case....it will be 2 months before FMF and conmebol reach another deal that hands out next copa libertadores to them and money prevails over the oldest suramerican competition FMF only has competirion in MLS and 2 teams from CR.....so, lets go south again. Is more an economics matter than health issue.
Or maybe it was when Chivas beat Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo. But they do not think they can repeat that feat.
