Italy 12(4)-(4)12 shots(sog), 4-7 corners, 4-3 offsides, 13-15 fouls, 20-7 tackles, 22-9 clearances, 49% possession, 75% (270/362) - (291/393) 74% passing.
That would be strange if they did. 2nd from the group gets Norway. 3rd gets either France or Germany.
Yes I know lol and that’s what the commentators pointed out as well during the last minutes of the match, discussing whether they wanted to score a goal more or not
In a time when women's football is just starting to catch on in Italy, a successful campaign in France will do incalculable good to push it into the mainstream
If anything, the CBF wanted Brazil to get 3rd. There has been speculation that the Fed is trying sabotage the team, hence the stupid substitutions and Vadao existence in general. Get 3rd and the WWC is all but over. The CBF knows this.
China or Nigeria in the R16. I would favor Italy against either. The quarters would be against Canada or the Netherlands. Will be interesting for sure. Germany in the semis would most likely be the end if they can get that far, but would be a great run nonetheless.
it may be just starting to catch on- but the coaching, tactics, and technical abilities rank among the best. Whether they have enough talented players to take them to the cup remains to be seen. Pretty much the same questions with the men's team in recent years.
Sexism, can use it as an excuse to not give the team any greater support/funding they ask for (just guessing her view, not stating mine). Pretty cynical hot take ofc.
Completely agree--another bad PK call. In fact, it was terrible--and where was the vaunted VAR review? Did they have one? This is why the VAR at this tourney is turning into BS. The Italian player actually got in front of the Brazilian--between her and the ball--and so was not a penalty, IMO.
I'm not saying I completely agree with the call, but this is a bit debatable to me. The Italian defender looked kind of beaten by Debinha on the play, and she made essentially zero effort to actually play the ball. To be able to properly and legally shield the ball, I think you generally have to be completely in position before the opposing player, and that wasn't the case here. I haven't seen any discussion of this call in the ref forum, and I'm a bit on the fence. I know I'm in the minority here though.
Just out of curiosity: does anyone know why the Brazilian players in this match celebrated the goal with the move of the baby-cradling?
I cannot figure out why they use that celebration and the one where they put a thumb in the mouth. Are they're trying to say "we schooled you"?
The thumb is, but the baby celebration started way back (by a Brasilian?) to celebrate the birth of his child.
So, no-one knows which birth the Brazilian players were supposedly celelbrating in the game vs Italy?
USA '94. I think it was Romario? Maybe Bebeto? Or both celebrated, maybe. I don't remember whose baby it was that had been born, though.
Yes, but this time I don't think it was one of the players just having had a baby: it would have been... apparent?
