My hope is for a good job from Irmatov and his crew. Call all the simulations as they occur and this match will be fine.

Anyone know what whistle Irmatov is using? It seems like one of those magic things that the players hear subconsciously but NO ONE else in the world can hear. Literally haven't heard it once this game, but players stop every now and then when he has a "whistle" to his lips.

    Edit: heard it. 29'

28' on a well hit CR FK, Netherlands bearhugs the target in the box, no-call but reminiscent of the PK called against CR in their opener.

34': obvious tactical foul goes without caution

33' Neth long ball, CR #16 falls at edge of own balls and handles. Foul called in CR favor, tough to see any contact from Neth player (looks like I'm a couple of mins behind).

Does this even remain worthy of comment in this WC?

In view of the 37' caution that was perhaps less obviously tactical (Robben fall after tug at the end of off-the-ball jostling), I think it does.

Will the anti-irmatov brigade be able to admit he had a good half?

Other than the poor call against Robben in the 32nd minute on the long ball (the Costa Rica defender tripped on his own feet, Robben didn't pull him down), Irmatov has been OK

He's done well so far, the one tactical foul non-caution notwithstanding. The caution on the off the ball holding quite clearly came from AR1, but he still sold it pretty well.

Why did Irmatov take so long to caution that Costa Rican player? I don't like it when referees do that. He spent about thirty seconds arguing with the players, then randomly took out the yellow card.

My guess is the headset communications aren't that clear when you've got players yelling at you. So it might have taken a while for him to understand that AR1 was asking for a caution, and probably even longer for the defender to be identified.

60' Campbell pushed in the back and appeals for PK, followed by a couple of possibly cautionable fouls by Neth.

Will Irmatov be equally lenient the other way?

64' Finally a caution for Netherlands, consistent with 37' caution against CR

That was a slow caution at 64', is AR1 dishing out more cards??

Was it dissent? PI? Reckless foul? Lots of options on that one.

Irmatov calling the game a lot closer to what we would like than what we think FIFA wants.
At least some cautions for technical fouls and what we would perceive as yellow. And both teams seem to be OK with his approach.

I really don't like AR2's bent-over, arms-wide, I've-got-my-eye-on-you stance when play is in front of him. Notably seen at 67:20.

Poor recognition of tactical fouls, refusal to admonish plastic for persistent infringement and poor rapport with players.

Well there goes my plan to not call "high kick" this year. Thanks Irmatov.
