Match #29 Belgium : Tunisia Saturday, 23 June 2018 15:00 local time (08:00 EDT) Moscow (Otkritie) Referee: Jair Marrufo (USA) AR1: Corey Rockwell (USA) AR2: Juan Zumba (SLV) Fourth Official: Andres Cunha (URU) Reserve AR: Nicolas Taran (URU) Video Assistant Referee: Mark Geiger (USA) AVAR 1: Bastian Dankert (GER) AVAR 2: Joe Fletcher (CAN) AVAR 3: Felix Zwayer (GER)
I think a lot of the foul was at least over the PA line, so yes to the PK. The VAR didn't even call Marrufo to look at the monitor.
The question of in or outside the penalty area never results in calling the CR to the monitor. It is a question of fact and the VAR simply informs the CR of the answer.
We finally get the camera angle that Geiger would have used. The foot contact is close, but the upper body/hip contact is inside the penalty area.
I think it was in. Obviously VAR team agreed. One thing I find interesting is the position of the cameras. Take a look at the bottom of this page. There are two ultra slo-mo cameras positioned perpendicular to the penalty area, but they are both on AR2's side. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent on AR1's side. Unless I'm missing something, this exact type of play would get a much more conclusive angle if it was on the far side of the field than if it was on the near side: https://football-technology.fifa.com/en/innovations/VAR-at-the-World-Cup
I didn't have a dissent card from Marrufo inside 15 minutes in the betting pool. He's doing very well.
I couldn’t tell, was it dissent or the foul that stopped the play. Optics certainly say dissent but I missed who committed the foul. Good for Marrufo either way.
Marrufo certainly didn’t end up with a throw away match. The intensity is off the charts and the Tunisians are barking at every call.
I really like how Lukaku said he wasn't diving... despite the fact that there was contact. Pretty sporting.
Tunisian defenders with arms raised for an offside appeal on Courtois’ GOAL KICK to Lukaku. And players wonder why we don’t take them seriously.
