Hola caballeros! Do any of you guys know of any movies based on the 1950 Maracanazo? I would really like to see a movie based on such a historic moment in the great game of futbol! Saludos
No but there is one about the usa victory over england: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354595/ And this one about the 1930 wc: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1634013/ its more of a ''road'' to the world cup for yugoslavia, not much about the wc persee. Good looking girls in it
In my studies, the Maracanazo was a double-edged sword to Uruguay. A lot of things the common person do not know about went on during the event. For example, the hypocricy and corruption of the federation. Before the match, the AUF boardmembers were pressuring the team to not lose by more than four goals (which already showed the confidence held on their players). After the final, the players, especially Obdulio Valera, refused to celebrate with the boardmembers and the officials. Valera went so far as to go to Rio de Janeiro that same night and hang out with the devastated Brazilians. The next day, when they got on the plane, the pilot announced that they could not take off because they were 200lbs overweight. Valera stood up, looked at the AUF boardmember that talked the most shit and said, "You! Get out!". The guy, his wife and kid rapidly got out of the place. When they got back to Montevideo, the boardmembers gave the players gold-coated bronze medals and 3000 current US dollars for winning the world cup. Meanwhile, they boardmembers bought for themselves real gold medals and used the money gained from the world cup to live in luxury. That was the start of the corruption that would inevitably sink Uruguay. The maracanazo also afftected the playing style of Uruguay. You have to realize that in the 20s and 30s, Uruguay was far more reknowned for their quality play than the "garra charrua". Having that "garra" is fine to win imposible games but it doesn't win 4-1 6-0, 8-0 and 5-0 matches like that Uruguay did. The problem with the Maracanazo was that it was the present in the 50s and 1924, 1928 and 1930 was far away, making it very easy to forget that Uruguay always played attractive football. That helped forget what made Uruguay initially successful and started a decline that ended in 1970. Uruguay is the current Copa America holders; Penarol is the current subcampeon of the Libertadores. So far, you guys are on a good path. But if you want to really regain your status you have to remember the style that your team used to play in the 20s and 30s because the "garra" will only take you so far (as seen in 2010). Becuase if you don't, Uruguay will become that horrific team of the 80's that won two Copa Americas but were roundly beaten in the World Cup and, had it not been for the format, Uruguay wouldn't have advanced past the group stages in neither 1986 and 1990. You guys have the balls....you need to rediscover your talent and RE-LEARN how to re-use it.
The Uruguay team that followed the 1950 World Cup palyed probably one of the best games of World Cup hitsory, the famous 2-4 loss against Hungary in over-time. That was by the way one of the reasons the Hungarians lost to Germany in the final as the semi-final took a lot of energy away. The decline started in the 1960s Today, with Cavani + Forlan + Suarez, the Celeste has one of the top attacking teams in the World. With el Maestro Tabarez at the helm, Uruguay can aim for another stellar performance - if they qualify - in 2014. Maracanazo
The greatest victory in history of Uruguayan football, 200 000 spectators on the Maracana.. on the halftime 1-0 to Brazil and then Garra.. the rest is history.. There is an anecdote related to the Brazilian coach Juan López.. When leaving from the stadium he was dressed as a woman how he can't be recognized from stadium personnel, he had greeted by the armourer at parting and then he got a slap in the face..
In 1950 Uruguay had a great team. Juan Alberto Schiaffino is the best number 10 ever for Uruguay. Omar Oscar Miguez the best center forward ever... Alcides Edgardo Ghighia, best right wing ever. Schubert Gambeta...best right half ever. Rodriguez Andrade...one of the best defender ever. Roque Gaston Maspoli...best goalkeeper ever. Obdulio Varela...the best centre half ever. Uruguay could defeat any team in the world with those players. El maracanazo was what we call "Una verdadera hazaña''
The 1954 was IMHO equal or better than the 1950 team. Hungary with the best team in its history defeated us after 120 minutes and when we were playing with nine players as Schiaffino and Rodrigueez Andrade were injured . The game ended 2x2 after 90 minutes... Uruguay team players ; R.Maspoli...Jose Santamaria...William Martinez. R.Andrade...Nestor Carballo...L.Cruz. Rafael Souto...Javier Ambrois...Eduardo Hobberg...Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Luis Borges. Uruguay played this game without two of its better players;Obdulio Varela and Omar Oscar Miguez. Previously Uruguay had defeated Scotland 8x0...and also England 4x2
