Wow, I'm impressed with the attendance figures. I didn't realize the Liga Mexicana Femenil was such a big deal. If I understand if correctly, players must be born in Mexico and only 2 players over 23 years old are permitted on each team. Odd, but why not? Lacking college teams, the Mexicans have invented a way to ensure that young Mexican-born players get on the field. What's the sentiment concerning the ban on Mexican-American players born in the USA? Will that rule change?
The Liga MX femenil is producing some good videos. Here's one on youtube that reminds me of some of the better USWNT videos. My favorite player on the champion Chivas (red and white kits) is old-timer Tania Morales, Number 10, who leads a herd of youngsters. She used to be on the Mexican National team, but I have no idea how she has made a living for the last 6 or so years.
The league n it's first year had 3 of the top 10 biggest crowds ever recorded for woso pro club soccer. Hopefully it's not a novelty! Did read that they will allow Mexican-American's this year. Guess the new season all ready started. Here's their website. Kinda confusing to go through, but rather vast http://www.ligafemenil.mx/
It's a shame they didn't do an squad video for this season (not even for the male side) but Tigres has been class with their woman branch, they constantly upload videos interviewing the players and have even broadcasted their local matches. But the thing I liked the most was how they introduced them 6 months ago: "We start together a new episode in Tigres' history..."
Tigres 2018's official squad picture: For the first time ever it include both the senior team and the women side
Tigres is already in the final after beating América 4 - 2 (agg.): Monterrey & Toluca play today to define the other finalist: They ended scoreless in the first leg, today they'll play @ Monterrey, so there could be Clásico Regio in the final!
Monterrey won 4 - 1 So we well have another Clásico Regio final in 5 months, along with the men's clásico this weekend... The first leg will be this Friday @ 9 pm (Mexico City time - Central time?) and the return next Friday May 4th @8:30 pm.
Referring to a stadium as "BBVA" means a very different location to those of us north of the border. X-D
oops, looks like that title might be in jeopardy, over 40K sold all ready for the ladies FA cup final at Wembley. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43962238 the MX Feminal championship might just beat that though(when is it?) Either way, glad to see large crowds at woso club games is not an novelty, unlike the US where the where it had it's biggest showing way back in 2001!
huge crowd on the first leg of the finals, The 2nd one should be later on tonight. Here's some highlights of the first game
The final 2nd leg was announced at a record 51,211: - https://futbol20.com/2018/05/05/liga-mx-femenil-womens-football-wins-in-clausura-2018-final/ There's no official video of the whole game - but this covers it pretty well, if it works: Ligafemenil.mx has just the goals: - http://www.ligafemenil.mx/cancha/playlist/91471/monterrey-vs-tigres and someone uploaded the pens: - youtube.com/watch?v=LtEx05vz-Ew The 2018 Women's FA Cup Final got 45,423, so superficially not far behind Mexico. But the league in Mexico (like others in Latin America and Spain) seems to be genuinely popular, and consistent in its high attendances - which England's WSL isn't managing to do.
THANK YOU for posting the highlights! I understand that Liga Mx Femenil is basically a U23 league. Based on what I saw in the highlights, I can boldly predict that Mexico's womens national team will become a Top 3 super power in the world. ..... With the connections of all the women's teams to the Men's clubs, and wearing the same kits, attendance in the league will dwarf all others in the world. What happened in that stadium will springboard Woso in Mexico way past cultural stereotypes for women. How could any fan claim -" who wants to see that -it is just women playing?"
Clubs in the 2018/19 season: (from 2018/19 Wikipedia page) A season preview, with 2 new teams and a change in the age restrictions: - http://www.womenssoccerunited.com/womens-liga-mx-third-semester/ (Archived) Mexico's U20 team is competing in the U20 Women‘s World Cup just now - http://www.womenssoccerunited.com/france-2018-liga-mx-biggest-challenge/ (Archived) A couple of early-season matches, starting with the defending champions: And action with new entrant club Lobos BUAP from Puebla (in red) v Cruz Azul: Latest games are on this channel: - https://www.youtube.com/user/TelevisaDeportes/search?query=mx+femenil
Interesting move to bump up the age restrictions by one year... I wonder if the plan is to have started U23 and then just let the restriction grow with the original players until there are no age restrictions at all. Missed opportunity, though, to have the teams on bye in each 9-team group not play each other otherwise.
The way the Men's Chivas teams have been playing in the league, it is no surprise that Chivas fans would rather see the women play.
A lot more than the regular season. This is from the season completed in May 2018. League average was 2,045. Highest reg season attendance 13,506, lowest 115.
Yeah, my post earlier had been slightly tongue-in-cheek. LMXF certainly is a draw during the playoffs, but generally get peanuts during the season. They do successfully have 3 teams that draw above 4k on average, and their league average is better than most UEFA leagues, but they're still well below NWSL in total attendance - even when you add the playoffs in! Side note - the fall 2017 season had an average of 2,743, so the spring 2018 average of 2,045 is a noticeable drop-off, even as the playoffs got more popular.
not quite on thread, but here's the Mexican NT in action vs Costa Rica a few days ago in something called the Caribbean & Central America games, Not sure if this is the championship game, but obviously the two most prominent teams for that region, lol. MX dominates & nice to see Corral(#9) in there, she was the leading scorer of the Spanish League last season.. I think they'll look stronger once the upcoming u20 WC is over
