I had a state playoff match for high school about 1.5 hours away scheduled at 6pm. No problem, I was driving and taking the entire crew with me. At 10am that day, I get an email and text that the match has been moved up to 4pm. I call the state assignor and tell her there is no way we can make it down there for a 4pm game, we assumed the game was at 6 and that we would be there at 5. State assignor says that both teams decided to move up the game, and just try to get down there as fast as we could. She told my local assignor (who was going with us) to put his Waze GPS on so that she could tell the coaches approximately when we would get there.
I pick up my crew and tell them the situation. I tell my local assignor the story, he just tells me to floor it. No way I am going to get a ticket I tell him. Well sure enough, just as I get on I-95 we get pulled over by a state patrol officer, he gets out of the car and tells us to follow him. Huh? He gets back in his car, flashes his lights and gets in the left lane, we are both doing about 100 down the interstate, he then escorts us to the field. We get there just as the national anthem is playing at the football stadium. I never change so fast before in my life.
Did the game, no problems, until the assessor shows up and fails us for being late. We explain the situation, he doesn't believe us. So on the way back home the local assignor calls the state assignor. She actually knows people in the state police, told the state police when to look for us through the Waze tracker and she remembered from a previous year the car I drove, and arranged the escort, She told us not to worry about the assessment either.

That makes for a good story, but I can't help being a little troubled by the state police putting the public safety at risk for a high school athletic event. Medical emergency I can understand, but soccer playoffs?

Now if it were pointy ball in certain southern states...
