I believe it’s actually the beating heart that kills you. As a machine, it only has a certain number of repetitions before failure. Smaller animals have higher heart rates and hence failure tends to come sooner.

My pulse rate has always been slow, and strong. I went for a stress test they needed to get it over 100 but mine stayed at 42. They had to give me a shot to get it high enough. I asked the quack if that was a bad thing, he said his theory is that you only get so many heartbeats. So I have plenty to spare. Yeah!
