The titles in this section are too dry. "Still Only Two Hours from Mom's Cooking: Green in Stuttgart." "Green about the hills: Julian at Stuttgart."
True but hey if you grew up there and went to there academy, simply having a photo in their jersey during an actual game just might be enough to coast through the rest of your life on
That's a rare thing for a lot of players. Even if you replace "Bayern" with "any team" it's very rare.
Donovan (2) McBride Green The exhaustive list of US knockout round goal scorers, iffin you don't include the 50's and earlier, which who knows how to classify.
But Donovan/McBride never played for CL teams. Wayne Rooney has never scored in a WC knockout (only one WC goal total, in fact). Ibra has never scored a WC goal. Messi hasn't. And on.
Donovan played CL for Leverkusen, not sure if he did for Bayern. McBride never played CL, I don't think he was around for Fulham's Europa run.
he only played at Bayern for a season while being on a loan and did not play in the CL for the club. Only League and Cup games. and he played 2 CL games with Leverkusen both against Liverpool if I recall right.
Well, we have few players to have scored in knock-out games because we don't make the knock-out rounds in European World Cups --and most World Cups have been in Europe, historically. Our record in World Cups on European soil: 4 participations, 0 wins, 1 tie, 9 losses, 6 GF, 26 GA, GD -20. It's a bad record when compared to that of the other five Big Six outside UEFA/C-BOL (MEX, CIV, GHA, JPN, ROK).
what's the explanation about our poor results on European soil. I notice we also tend to perform quite terrible against Eastern European opposition.
US isn't the only nation that struggles against Eastern Europeans. Germany struggled against Croatia, Serbia/Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Czech, and we usually either draw or barely beat the Poles in competitive matches. I would put it in their style of play and some of those countries seem to be pretty aggressive ones.
Green could be "not good enough for Bayern" and still be one of the best 5 USMNT field players of all time. I think folks should ease up and see what he can do at Stuttgart. Patience folks. Green is still only 21. He's the same age as Kellyn Acosta (both born in June 95).
We read that completely different. To me it says he got his dream and now he can play balls out no pressure. He only wanted to go one place. To BM and in CL. Now he can start really dreaming. Any team is an option. Glad the kid stuck it out and got to live his dream. Has a world of possibilities.
there are plenty of players that "flopped" at Bayern, it's one of the top teams in Europe and there is plenty of competition for places. Just today Ancelotti was talking about how he was forced to bench Ribery because of that. plenty of players who tried to make it to Bayern moved to other teams and established themselves there. Some like Hummels return to Bayern once they've made a name for themselves. From what I've seen the players like Muller, Lahm, Alaba etc that played for Bayern's youth and established themselves at Bayern are rare. And the club is more likely to buy experienced players. so Green leaving makes sense he's not the first nor will he be the last. Good for him as now he'll get better chances of making a name for himself.
Green's journey so far looks an awful lot like Lahm's. Lahm made a CL 2 min sub as a 19yo and then did not see the field for the next year+. He then went on a 2 year loan to Stuttgart before returning to Bayern.
but Lahm was loaned and played 70+ games there including plenty of times he was injured and developed his game further. When he came back to Bayern there was still competition for places as well as the fact that he got injured again. Basically for 2 seasons his game was affected by injuries. He played 20+ games in his 1st season back at Bayern. In his 2nd season back at Bayern he established himself as a regular. Green on the other hand was loaned out to Hamburger and barely played whether with the first team or the 2nd team. When he returned to Bayern the next season he was dumped to the reserves and only played 1 match for the 1st team. The next season he left Bayern having only played 2 cup games. in the end, Lahm is a player that came from the youth and succeeded at Bayern, while Green did not. Could Green have eventually succeeded if he had stayed? Perhaps, but we'll never know the answer.
In his two seasons on loan, Lahm played 72 matches and Stuttgart finished 4th place and 5th place in the Bundesliga. In Lahm's first season, Ranieri's Chelsea eliminated Stuttgart by a one goal margin in the Champions League Round of 16. Lahm also played every minute at the age of 20 for Germany in its (disappointing) Euro 2004. Comparing Lahm and Green appears to be totally illogical at this stage. Let's hope Green can achieve at least a portion of Lahm's success.
