Fürth (#13) beat Regensburg (#8) 0-2, away, in one of their best games of the season (still boring to watch, TBH). Second win in their last 11 league games, the other being at home against hapless relegation fodder Duisburg (where our Joe Gyau doesn't play).

Green played 75 minutes today and unleashed a cannon from long-distance that ended up in the back of the net, giving Furth an early 1-0 lead. The bad news is that it will not be counted as Green's goal, because it deflected first off the post and then off the back of Arminia Bielefeld's goalkeeper. So it will be counted as an own goal. I remember Dempsey having the same thing happen at Fulham to one of his goals.

The match is 2-2 in the closing minutes.

The ass-tap notwithstanding, Green has one of the best long shots on the US team.

After that goal Kicker has to stop classifying him as the worst regular player in the 2.BuLi.

its weird cuz sometimes i feel like he doesnt get enough power on his shots though, too....overall, the USMNT has been pretty lame from distance over recent cycles, imo.....a definite area for potential improvement.

    Nice goal.
As far as US should shoot more from distance, there are two important things to consider.. First, you need a lane to shoot through and iwhile any lane is good, one away from the keeper is great. Second, you need enough time and space to step into the ball so you can get enough on the shot. If the defense is doing their job, both become difficult when in final third. I only say this as it just saying “the US should shoot more from distance” isn’t as easy as it sounds. When you look at xG for shots outside of the box, it is very low. There is also the danger of blocked shots leading to dangerous transitions or just easily giving up possession by goal kicks, etc.

Well, if the ball wasn't going in the net before a deflection then the goal is attributed to whomever deflected it.

Recent cycles?? It's always been like that for us. I always wished the US could shoot from distance like the southeastern Europeans or west Africans would do in the 90s World Cups.

This. We've rarely had a guy willing and able - JJ would rip once in a while. Bradley very rarely, but has done it once or twice. LD and Demps now and again. But we really lack consistent 20-25 ranger hitters. Green has hit that shot a few times - and scores more due to placement/timing than power. He understands that shot. Wish his overall game would rise to a consistent level so he'd get more chances.

    Exactly what I said.

If rules in Germany are different than the Premier League, then that's good for Green because he needs the goal.

As I mentioned above, I remember that Dempsey scored a similar goal that was counted as an own goal in his Fulham days. It occurred in a February 2012 match against Stoke.

Fulham soon had breathing space as Clint Dempsey's fine 25-yard strike thundered off the crossbar in the 28th minute, hitting Thomas Sorensen and crossing the line for an own goal.

The only Youtube video that I can find does not actually show the moment due to a woman's head, but I think this is it.

Kind of cruel, but if the ball first strikes the post or crossbar, it is not a shot on goal.

How many open shots from 20-25 are passed up?
Yedlin took one against Chile and who the heck wants him shooting?

Threatening from mid-range does two things (at least) - draws out a bunker (or scores on them) and forces defenders to commit, which allows them to be beat the next time. I've never understood why our middies don't shoot more.

USMNT defenders have been pretty piss-poor shooters from range historically....it always impresses me when a good euro team or south american team has defenders than can hit bombs....opens up a whole new avenue of attack...

i guess the us defenders are just not skilled enough (or havent been)....what is it?

is shooting from distance really such a rare trait? seems it is much rarer in the us pool than other similar or better countries....

Well, Zimmerman scored a rocket from outside the box two weeks ago. Other than that, though, the only American that stands out for rangy shooting is Larentowicz. Dude has (or, at least, had) a laser strike. Maybe he can become our shooting coach.

    Looks like he is playing a #10 in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3.

2 positives early in the match; dropping back and making regista-like long accurate diagonal switches and good service on a FK restart.
