I believe that was listed as a FIFA full fledged Italy A international match. Some of the players like Massaro, Battistini, Bagni , Fanna and Vierchowod appeared for Italy's Olympic team later on that summer in the 1984 Summer Olympics. The only ones who weren't picked were those who had played in a WC game.. Not a bad result at the time featuring a lot of NASL players. Too bad the league folded the very next year.

I can't wait for the day to see a comparable Italian team. That back line is incredible!

A lot was made about the result but it was played on the concrete astroturf.

Yeah but didn't that go both ways? Other than Alan Green who played for Coventry City, that USMNT didn't have many players who could play in the Serie C or D. Maybe Hugo Perez and Jeff Durgan could have held their own but the rest were the equivalent of college all stars.

Let's put it this way. It was a friendly. It was a friendly played on a concrete surface. Knowing Italy and their history with friendlies and then adding the conditions, it was not a hard fought match. It was raining as well that night. Can't remember if we had a delay for thunder or not.

I just remember reading in Italian newspapers that it was a disgrace that they played to a scoreless draw against the USA....

By the highlights , it seems that Italy kept pressing and dominating though...

Here is another game from that year against Mexico. I always wonder how these guys would have done in today's game. I'm thinking if they trained in the same manner as the players do today, they would be just as good if not stronger... ...

If I recall, the match was at 9:00. My neighbor who was from Peru called me around 5:00 and asked if I wanted to go to see the game. At 6:00, we packed into his van with his wife and two boys (the oldest was a year younger than me. He drove like crazy up I-95 and the NJ Turnpike. We got there just in time.

That was a strong build up Signore. I was thinking to myself that the ending is going to be good. Something about you guys parting hard in the van on the way back, got lost, ended up being rescued by a bus of hot women, one of them was named Maria and you didn't make it back home till the next day.

One of the names my Dad mentioned a lot...that guy...to the right. :)

He and Pele butted heads a lot. Chinaglia was definitely the alpha male on that front line. After one game Chinaglia bitched out Pele, saying that he wasn't passing him the ball enough. Pele said that he was shooting from impossible angles. Chinaglia got in his face and said: "I am Chinaglia. If I shoot from a place, it's because Chinaglia can score from there." Pele ran out of the dressing room.

I saw an interview in Italian before he died and Giorgio said they had a blowup but it only lasted one game. He said Pele kept coming inside where Chinaglia was and he couldn't get loose. Even though he was effective , Pele was 36 and almost done and Chinaglia was 29 and in his prime when he came to the Cosmos so I'm sure that didn't help matters.
