Happy National Pizza Day! The first recorded reference to "pizza" is from 997 AD in the seaside, southern Italian city of Gaeta, which is about 50 miles north of Naples. But the city of Naples/Napoli perfected the art of pizza-making, and the worldwide favorite "pizza margherita" was invented there in 1889, in honor of Queen Margherita di Savoia. The pizza was specifically designed to include the colors of the Italian flag: green (basil), white (mozzarella), and red (tomatoes).
