The New York Times has an interesting article (Jun-3-2012) about the most recent match-fixing scandal in Italy. The article starts with: "Soccer in Italy is not unlike driving. Laws are treated merely as suggestions." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/sports/soccer/stain-of-scandal-again-taints-italian-soccer.html The article says that gambling on soccer amounts to $220B annually. Last year, FIFA --the most unaccountable, corrupt, non-nation governing body on the planet-- pledged $20M to work with Interpol to contain match-fixing.
Match fixing is bigest problem in soccer and it is usuall practice in countries like Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia. But I am surprised again and again to see Italy being involved in match fixing every few years... Players earn a lot of money there so I do not see why they fex matches and risk their "jobs"
