...or is it just numbers on a screen? Based on the NWSL prediction game, it'd be nice to try something similar in world women's soccer for a few months. Predict the scores of a group of 4 games each week, which I'll post here on Mondays for the following Saturday/Sunday. They'll be club or international matches from different countries, hopefully some big games. And there may also be a few teams you've never heard of! This is the joy of Predicto Feel free to join anytime during the thread, and try to "win" the week. I'll update a top 3/5 for each week, and for the overall game. The 2018 winner will receive the original melted-down Jules Rimet Trophy: (by email) Copy or quote the list of matches, and guess each team's score. 3 points maximum for a totally correct guess. Accumulate points like this: 1pt for correct result (W/L/D) 1pt for correct goal difference 1pt for getting one team's score right For the exceptional circumstances of the upcoming internationals, the first round is extended to a long weekend with 6 games starting Fri 31 Aug.
Aug 31 - Sep 4 Fri. Wales - England Fri. USA - Chile Sat. Iceland - Germany Sun. Canada - Brazil Tue. Denmark - Sweden Tue. Norway - Netherlands Guesses anytime before a game's kickoff – Wales-England is on Fri 31 Aug, U.S. time 2.45pm ET / 7.45pm UK. The European games are decisive World Cup qualifiers - the Scandinavian teams will all play once before the weekend, so you may wish to guess 4 games first, and the other 2 matches later. The North American fixtures are friendlies, but the U.S. and Chile haven't met before, so that's very exciting Go with your gut, or consult the head-to-heads - https://int.women.soccerway.com/mat...fying-europe/wales/england/2448346/head2head/ - https://int.women.soccerway.com/mat...ing-europe/iceland/germany/2448353/head2head/ - https://int.women.soccerway.com/mat...iendly-women/canada/brazil/2857861/head2head/ - https://int.women.soccerway.com/mat...ying-europe/denmark/sweden/2448361/head2head/ - https://int.women.soccerway.com/mat...-europe/norway/netherlands/2448358/head2head/
A couple of extra things about rules - Thrashings: If a team scores 6 or more, or if GD is 6 or more, guesses are allowed 1 goal either way – e.g. if a game ends 6-0, the guesses 5-0 or 7-0 are also considered correct. Extra time: If a knockout match goes to ET and the score changes, predictions are rewarded for either the score after 90 mins, or the score after 120 mins, whichever gets more points. It's just a bit of fun, but if I can't post a fixture list one week due to Predicto-stress, you can choose your own 4 games to predict for that weekend. Fri. Wales 1 - 1 England Fri. USA 3 - 1 Chile Sat. Iceland 0 - 0 Germany Sun. Canada 1 - 2 Brazil Tue. Denmark 2 - 0 Sweden Tue. Norway 2 - 2 Netherlands
I also posted this in the NWSL predictions thread; Norway has won the UWC twice (not zero) ; the AC at least twice (not zero) ; FNT perhaps twice (NOR/USA/GER/CHN) and (NOR/CAN/CHN/KOR) - as I say, give credit where it is due! I think this was a Soccerway chart, from the link given, above.
Fri. Wales 1 - 2 England Fri. USA 3 - 0 Chile Fri. Slovakia 0 - 3 Norway (my additional game) Sat. Iceland 0 - 0 Germany Sun. Canada 2 - 2 Brazil Tue. Denmark 2 - 1 Sweden Tue. Norway 2 - 1 Netherlands
...yeah, historical records for women's soccer are sometimes patchy, of course. Soccerway's better on stats and fixtures for more recent years, which are probably more helpful in this game. A rough guide, anyway.
Wales 1 England 2 USA 5 Chile 1 Iceland 2 Germany 2 Canada 3 Brazil 2 Denmark 1 Sweden 1 Norway 1 Netherlands 1 You're right that this is the hardest game in the world. Most of these games are really a coin toss: they could go either way and a lot of them will basically decide if some big teams will qualify directly to WWC 2019 or not. I bet on a lot of goals (I notice now that I didn't precict a single team scoring 0 goals ) and most of my predictions are quite out on a limb. My main prediction is: no matter the number of people who will try to guess these games, I am going to be the worse of them! This is a quite easy prediction, actually...
Good game, @sbahnhof! I’ll give it a shot: Fri. Wales 1 - 2 England - - - - I really want to watch this one! Fri. USA 4 - 0 Chile Sat. Iceland 0 - 0 Germany Sun. Canada 2 - 2 Brazil Tue. Denmark 1 - 1 Sweden Tue. Norway 1 - 1 Netherlands
Thanks! However, I now know I will be watching soccer in person during the Wales-England match; D3 Rochester vs. Stevenson, followed by D3 #4 Hardin-Simmons vs. #7 William Smith. [ See "Division 3 - 2018" thread in the Women's College Forum].
OMG they have a lot of teams! Ah well. Russia v England made it to YouTube, I'm sure Wales-England will too.
Fri. Wales 0 England 0 Fri. USA 5 Chile 1 Sat. Iceland 1 Germany 1 Sun. Canada 2 Brazil 2 Tue. Denmark 1 Sweden 2 Tue. Norway 1 Netherlands 1
And here are the points from that match. Most guessed the right result, but not the scorelines - Amerinorsk 1, blissett 1, CoachJon 1, shlj 1 (getting Wales' score correct). (Late entries are welcome anytime.) USA-Chile is next, at 03:00 GMT. Fri. USA - Chile Sat. Iceland - Germany Sun. Canada - Brazil Tue. Denmark - Sweden Tue. Norway - Netherlands
Nobody predicted that Germany would win? Oh dear. Remember, you should be predicting what you think will happen, not the funniest possible outcome. @59Amerinorsk correctly guessed the US-Chile scoreline, and is top with 5pts so far. (edit) @blissett is also on 5pts, I missed one. @Lechus7 and @CoachJon have 4pts each, and @shlj 2pts.
