Let's form a Best-of team out of the last 11 CL winners (1994/95-2004/05). From each winning team, one player can be selected. Here are my selections (only players that played in the final, thus no Roy Keane): -------------Shevchenko (Milan 03)--------del Piero (Juve 96) ---Zidane (Real 02)--Redondo (Real 98)--Gerrard (LFC 05)--Beckham (ManU 99) --R.Carlos (Real 00)--Rijkaard (Ajax 95)--Sammer (BVB 97)--Ferreira (Porto 04) ------------------------------Kahn (Bayern 01)
OK, that was fun, here's the best of for the years 1983/84 to 1993/94. ---------------Futre (Porto 87)-----------van Basten (Milan 89) --M.Laudrup (CFB 92)--Platini (Juve 85)--Savicevic (RS 91)--Lerby (PSV 88) --Maldini (Milan 90)--Desailly (OM 93)--Baresi (Milan 94)--Neal (LFC 84) ---------------------------Ducadam (Steaua 86)
Can't resist, here's my selection for the years 1972/73 to 1982/83: ------Dalglish (LFC 78)------Müller (Bayern 76)------Keegan (LFC 77) -----Francis (NF 79)--------Magath (HSV 83)--------Hoeness (Bayern 74) --Krol (Ajax 73)--Hansen (LFC 81)--Beckenbauer (Bayern 75)--Anderson (NF 80) ----------------------------Spink (Villa 82) This was definitely the least exciting period so far....
Last but not least ... the years 1961/62 to 1971/72: -----------Eusebio (Benfica 62)---------------Amancio (Real 66) --Mazzola (Inter 64)--Cruyff (Ajax 71)--Charlton (ManU 68)--Trapattoni (Milan 63) --Schnellinger (Milan 69)--Israel (FR 70)--Hulshoff (Ajax 72)--Gemmell (Celtic 67) ------------------------------Sarti (Inter 65)
Best players whose zodiac is the cancer (22.6-22.7): Code: v.Nistelrooy Raúl Zidane Giuly Zé Roberto Vieira Maldini Stam Zebina Belletti Barthez
A very good selection. But you mean Krol not Kohl, don't you? Here's my Best XI for World Cup final losers (I will include the 1950 Brazil vs. Uruguay game in this, although it wasn't a final technically): -----------------Riva (1970)------------------R.Baggio (1994) -----Sarosi (1938)----Zizinho (1950)----Hidegkuti (1954)---Hamrin (1958) --Schnellinger (1966)---Krol (1978)---Förster (1982 & 86)---Burgnich (1970) -----------------------------Planicka (1934) I left out Puskas and Cruyff because I didn't want to dublicate any player already mentioned. Normally they would of course have made this Best XI.
Why are Zizinho and Hidegkuti in the midfield? In a way, I can understand Hidegkuti's place there because the withdrawn centre-forward is similar to the modern attacking midfielder but Zizinho was a inside-right and I don't know why he has been moved further back.
Now we are talking! That's a quality striking partnership. Out of all the CL winners XI's, the 1983/84 to 1993/94 is my favourite. So many players that I like. I agree on that one. You're had to put in some Nottingham Forest players. I think SirManchester would disagree because there are quite a few Germans.
Best XI for Olympic 1996..... based on their career performance, not . I tried to drop all overage players. I selected Zanetti who was probably overage player, but young enough to be on this team. GK Dida RB Zanetti CB Nesta CB Cannavaro LB Roberto Carlos LM Wiltord CM Makelele CM Juninho RM Pires FW Raul FW Ronaldinho -- now better known as Ronaldo Bench Ayala Crespo. Morientes Kanu Ortega
Here's a toughie: an all-time Liga Primera Best XI without any players from Real Madrid or Barcelona. My gut feeling is that this is going to involve a lot of Basques. FW: Telmo Zarra (Athletic Bilbao) FW: Juan Arza (Sevilla) CM: Diego Simeone (Atlético Madrid) CB: Andoni Goikoetxea (Athletic Bilbao) CB: Jose Luis Caminero (Atlético Madrid) GK: Luis Arconada (Real Sociedad) I'm going to need help on this one.
Best XI for Olympic medalists since 1984 when it became a professional tournament. -- Based on career performance GK: Dida(Bronze 1996) RB: Zanetti(Silver 1996) CB: Ayala(Silver 1996, Gold 2004) CB: Sensini(Silver 1996) or Puyol (Silver 2000) LB: Roberto Carlos(Bronze 1996) RM: Hassler (Bronze 1988) DM: Dunga(Silver 1984) CM: Stojkovic(Bronze 1984) LM: Luis Enrique(Gold 1992) FW: Romario(Silver 1988) FW: Ronaldo(Bronze 1996) Klinsmann(Bronze 1988) Beberto(Silver 1988, Bronze 1996) Taffarel(Silver 1988) Jorginho(Silver 1988) Guardiola(Gold 1992) Okocha (Gold 1996) Kanu(Gold 1996) Terez(Gold 2004) Ortega(Silver 1996) Simeone(Silvre 1996) Crespo(Silver 1996) Juninho(Bronze 1996) Ivan Zamorano(Bronze 2000) Kameni(Gold 2000) Etoo(Gold 2000) Lauren(Gold 2000) Puyol(Silver 2000)
Best XI for players who played in all three Final of the WC Finals, the European Championship and the European Cup/CL. GK Zoff/Maier RB Lilian Thuram CB Facchetti CB Beckenbauer LB Brehme RW K.H.Rummenigge DM Marcel Desailly AM Zidane LM Breitner FW Gerd Muller FW Hoeness
Uhm Van Basten who missed against Denmark at EC 92? Edit: I saw that someone else already mentioned it.
A couple which haven't been done: An all-time English league XI based on players who've never won the league. (Actually you could do that with any league) An all-time XI of players who never played in a major tournament final since 1960 (Major tournament = Cl\European cup, WC and European championship) All-time XI of players who played at only one club. Greatest XI from nations who have never won a major international trophy.
How about Pichichi? He is a forward that played for Bilbao early in their history and the Spanish leading goalscoring award is named after him. I'm not sure on his real name. You could put in Juan Senor, played in the 1980s for Real Zaragoza. Was Julen Guerrero any good? I don't know too much about him.
I've created an XI with player's who were UEFA Cup winners in the 1990s. GK ------------------- Kahn (Bayern 96) SW -----------------Matthaeus (Inter 91 and Bayern 96) DF Bergomi (Inter 91 and 94) ----- Cannavaro (Parma 99) ------ Brehme (Inter 91) MD Winter (Ajax 92 and Inter 98)--------- D Baggio (Parma 95 and 99) ----Van't Schip (Ajax 92) MD ---------------------R Baggio (Juve 93) FW Wilmots (Schalke 97) ------ Klinsmann (Inter 91 and Bayern 96) Here's an XI the South Americans that have played in the Serie A: GK ------------- Dida SW ----------- Edinho DF Cafu -----Montero ----- Aldair DM Dunga --------- Alemao AM Francescoli ------Maradona ST Batistuta ------- Ronaldo
I have been trying to do a best XI for the loser in the family. It will be a team of players who have a playing family member and are considered the weaker of the two. I came up with Pele's son as the keeper. I had Edwin Koeman, Jordhi Cruyff, Michael Rummenggie and Hugo Maradona. I am unsure about the van de Kerkhofs
Great suggestion. Here's an all-time Bundesliga XI made of players that never won the league: ------K Allofs--------Fischer------Littbarski ------Briegel--------Schuster------Hässler ----Dietz-----Rüssmann----Schulz-----Berthold ---------------------Nigbur
Very little is known about Pichichi, though, and since he played so long ago and died very young his legend has grown far beyond his actual accomplishments. I'm not totally sold on Arza - I thought about Isidro Langara - but Telmo Zarra is a no-brainer at center forward, being the Liga Primera's all-time leading goalscorer and joint record holder for most goals scored in a season (38, tied with Hugo Sanchez). I'm not sure what position Senor played, to be honest. And Guerrero is still playing.
Zarra is a must and at the moment, you might need to keep Arza and Langara. Senor played in the midfield and he scored the equalizing goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Spain and Belgium. Why do you have second thoughts on Arza? He scored 182 goals in 350 matches and ninth on the all-time goalscoring list for goalscorers in Spain. Some other suggestions are inside-left Panizo, who played 327 games and scored 133 goals between 1939-55 for Bilbao as well as playing for Spain at Brazil 50, Satrustegui who played for Sociedad in 1980s, outside-left Gainza who played in the 40s and 50s with Bilbao and Uralde, a teammate of Satrustegui at Real Sociedad. What do people think of Guerrero? Is he considered as a good player, a very good player or what else? I knowledge of him is limited. How about Juan Pizzi or is he one of those "what if he did this" type of player?
I originally had him in the squad but I dropped him at the last minute. I wanted to have at least one player from each winner, hence the inclusion of the not so great Wilmots and I really wanted both Dino and Roberto Baggio in the team. Klinsmann is a must upfront especially because he scored 15 goals in the 1995-96 campaign for Bayern and unfortunately Bergkamp was the unlucky dismissal.
In the Italian forum, I created a forum about Uruguayans who played for Cagliari. Thanks to sardus_pater, I've created a Cagliari XI with Uruguayans only. GK ----------------- Carini DF Diego Lopez ----- Herrera ----- Joe Bizera MD Abeijon --- Francescoli --- Tejera ---- O'Neill ST Dario Silva --- Fonseca --- Victoriano Tejera is a player from recent times, not the one that played for Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup.
