Yes, if only he was as efficient otherwise. Also impressed with Nico Elvedi's match. From gifting a goal to Belgium after sixty seconds to scoring the (group-winning) fourth. And of course Kevin Mbabu in only his third appearance. I don't even have to mention Shaqiri. It was a word-class performance from him.
Fun fact for the trivia junkies here: Switzerland's appearance in the Final Four of the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League is their first appearance in the top four of any senior-level UEFA or FIFA tournament since their silver medal at the 1924 Olympics (a senior, more or less A-team tournament in those days).
Completely forgot that I could add the [R] myself Looks like everyone got the UEFA memo to make this inaugural Nations League as exciting as possible, and they delivered in spades! Remember how worried a couple of us were about dead rubbers in the last matchday? At least in League A, we only ended up with one
Yeah, hardly any dead rubbers outside League D. I was never worried about there being a lot of dead rubbers. The tournament is set-up to give us evenly-balanced groups (except in League D where that is impossible). Plus its almost mathematically impossible to have many dead-rubbers when every position in a group has a different outcome (either promoted, relegated or stay where you are). My main concern was that the teams in League A wouldn't take it very seriously, but that was clearly not an issue.
Being 1924 finalists against Uruguay also made us defacto European champions. There was no Euros and we were the highest European finisher. Anyway, the first UEFA Nations League group stage is now concluded: League A Finals: Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, England Relegated: Germany, Iceland, Poland, Croatia League B Promoted: Ukraine, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark Relegated: Slovakia, Turkey, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland League C Promoted: Scotland, Finland, Norway, Serbia Relegated: Estonia, Cyprus, Slovenia, Lithuania League D Promoted: Georgia, Belarus, Kosovo, Macedonia Dead Last: Andorra, San Marino, Malta, Liechtenstein I can't believe Liechtenstein finished behind Gibraltar. But the crappiest team in Europe award goes to San Marino. Zero points and zero goals! In a group with "peers"!
Yes, I was shocked when I saw their goal-difference before last match. No goals in 540 mins against those crap teams. Jeeeeez.
In the article posted in the Club World Cup expansion thread there was mention of South American teams maybe being involved within the Nations league in Future Editions. (Followed by a World Cup every two years discussion.) A UEFA-CONMEBOL Nations league would be pretty cool.
Apparently CAF is going to announce a Nations League which will begin in Aug 2019 right after the 2019 ANC in the summer. It seems this is the future, and I hope this builds to a Global Nations League which would be great.
Excellent news! IMO, the CAF and UEFA share a same issue that the Nations League goes a long way towards fixing: a dearth of competitive matches between the top sides outside of continental finals.
https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2018/12/261411/caf-african-league-nations/ here is something from Morocco
You are actually more likely to play better teams in a nations league than in an actual continental tournament. With the 24 team format you will be avoiding the top teams until later, if you get knocked out early, or other top teams get knocked out early , there can be a lack of top quality match ups for many teams. This nations league format ensures you play the top teams who are more or less your equal.
I haven't heard anything about that, but it may happen in the future. As is this nations league could take place in just 3 FIFA windows with double headers, so it wouldn't really take up that much time. It would be best if they used it to double as the ANC qualifying for the next edition.
Hold up, now: and why would there only be 36 teams participating? The likes of São Tomé e Príncipe need games, too...
Yup. And the World Cup, for that matter. Once it expands to 48 teams, clashes between top teams will be few and far between.
And has already happened by default and it can only get worse. Nigeria hasn't played Ghana in almost a decade and they're among the biggest rivals on the continent... this could certainly help with that...
With a CAF championship every two years its not as if they don't get the opportunity. A nations league can easily still see them in different groups with one of them not making it through to the finals.
The reason CAF and Concacaf hold biennial tournaments is because of the revenue generated. If a Global Nations League were to materialize, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to only hold one continental championship every four years, especially if a Nations League generated anywhere near the money that FIFA promised it would.
It depends on how many teams would make money from a Global Nations League. The Gold Cups that will have 16 teams and Africa Cup of Nations that will have 24 teams will include teams that aren't among the top 100 in the world. If a Global Nations League has its top league with 8 groups of 4 for 32 teams or even 16 groups of 4 for 64 teams, there could be Concacaf and CAF teams who would prefer the status quo to half as many confederational tournaments and a Global Nations League.
My guess 6 continental Nations league fighting for a spot in the 32 teams Worrd League. Everybody happy. This year Panama vs Jamaica, Canada and Costa Rica and if we beat then next year versus Germany, Colombia and Japan, home and away. The worst 8 of the WL get replaced by the best team of it own confederation PROBLEMS: Oceania get a spot? How many times we gonna see a USA-Mexico or a Japan-Korea in the WL?
Mathematically it would be probable that they meet every four years with a CAF Nations League season every 2 years though...
