How often does a club in League Championship that was in League One the previous season finish ahead of all three clubs that were in the Premier League the previous season? Leeds United is currently 4 points ahead of Hull City, who is ahead of fellow relegated last season clubs Burnley and Portsmouth.

This season is a little unusual in that respect, because none of the three relegated teams are challenging for the top two. Usually you have a Sunderland, Birmingham or West Brom who tend to yo-yo between the divisions. Shown below are the highest finishing relegated and promoted teams from the last few seasons. We can see from below that at least one relegated team is usually in the playoffs, while at least one promoted team tends to finish in the top half.

Only Bristol City in 2008 have managed it recently.

    2010: Newcastle (R) 1st - Leicester (P) 5th
    2009: Birmingham (R) 2nd - Swansea (P) 8th
    2008: Watford (R) 6th - Bristol C (P) 4th
    2007: Sunderland (R) 1st - Colchester (P) 10th
    2006: Crystal Palace (R) 6th - Luton (P) 10th
    2005: Wolves (R) 9th - QPR (P) 11th
    2004: West Brom (R) 2nd - Wigan (P) 7th
    2003: Leicester (R) 2nd - Reading (P) 4th
    2002: Manchester City (R) 1st - Millwall (P) 4th
    2001: Watford (R) 9th - Preston (P) 4th

    2000: Charlton (R) 1st - Manchester C (P) 2nd
    1999: Bolton (R) 6th - Watford (P) 5th
    1998: Nottingham F (R) 1st - Stockport (P) 8th
    1997: Bolton (R) 1st - Oxford (P) 17th
    1996: Leicester (R) 5th - Huddersfield (P) 8th **** four down, two up
    1995: Sheffield U (R) 8th - Reading (P) 2nd (not promoted)

you also have last year's League One Champs Norwich City challenging for promotion to the Premier League as well. Last team to do a double promotion was Man City, I believe.

As of now there would be a Promotion semifinal between Norwich City (currently 3rd) and Leeds United (currently 6th) both of whom were in League One last season. Norwich City is 1 point behind Cardiff City for automatic promotion.

^Sadly, Leeds couldn't make it into the playoffs. We fell apart at the last hurdle.

Though @ topic - the trend did occur last season. Norwich finished above all three relegated Premiership clubs from the previous season.
