Leeds United is currently 4 points ahead of Hull City, who is ahead of fellow relegated last season clubs Burnley and Portsmouth.

Usually you have a Sunderland, Birmingham or West Brom who tend to yo-yo between the divisions. Shown below are the highest finishing relegated and promoted teams from the last few seasons. We can see from below that at least one relegated team is usually in the playoffs, while at least one promoted team tends to finish in the top half. Norwich City is 1 point behind Cardiff City for automatic promotion.

Though @ topic - the trend did occur last season. Norwich finished above all three relegated Premiership clubs from the previous season.
