Muni was a solid 3rd in popularity for the longest time. U - Muni was dubbed "el clasico moderno" even in the 90s.

actually cristal - La U was branded el clasico moderno

since they both dominated the 90's

remember alianza went 17 years without winning the national championship

and muni in the 90's were usually found at the bottom of the table

Whoa, Valeriano Lopez was a monster, good deal.

And I've always wondered what's with the "gallina" nickname? I know it's been around forever but where does it come from? Please don't tell me you bit the Argentines' nickname for River Plate.

Probably created by the other teams because those are actually insults, right? It probably just came from the common slang words used by the people and they started calling them and their teams those names.

    Origin?
Where to look it up? Who to ask?

I know if I ask my dad, he will tell me some Peruvian invented the word. One time in grade school, I asked my dad for help with some history homework and he gave a totally different perspective from what is taught in the USA that the teacher gave me an F. :D

Years later, I learned that he was correct, but gave it a different angle.

I know that the name "Gallina" was given to River Plate because during a match between Boca-River, a chicken was seen on the field, I believe that it came out of the River Plate tribuna.

Boca fans are called "Bosteros" because they are located at the end of the river, in other words where all the "Crap" from the river ends up. There was horrible stench in the area where Boca used to play. I beleive Boca are called cagones.

P.S. Im a huge River Plate fan and "U" fan, in other words... Gallina for life!

I'm almost sure Cristal are called pavos because of their passive fans.

Aliancistas were called monos and negros for years for obvious reasons. In the 90s U fans began calling them "cagones", probably cuz those were the years Alianza sucked so bad and hadn't won a championship in 19 years.

I think its because of the uniform.

Alianza are called cagones because of the black horsemen back in the 1930's and also since a lot of peruvian are racist(for them being black is being synonymous to shit)

And why does people call SC pavos? I still dont get it, because there was a farm of turkeys in the SC institution or what?

Because la U's opponents are some dull, unimaginative tards. They just copied the insult of other teams around South America

River Plate, Nacional de Uruguay and a couple of other teams are also called gallinas. Lame.

That's not it. Alianza only began being called cagones in the late 90s. Before that, it was strictly "monos". Growing up, that's all I knew. How embarrassing.

And you're probably serious about not knowing why Cristal are pavos so here it is: In Peruvian slang, a pavo is someone that's dim-witted, slow and even nerdy. Cristal's "barra" has always been small and weak so they got that name.

Of course, that's not true anymore. I mean, just look at fran.

Thats what a friend told me years ago, and he was 35 years old.

There were black horsemen in the hipodromo of Monterrico and all of them were aliancistas thats how it started.
