I’m glad Chris is productive and that he is still playing well. At 35 though, I believe it’s time for Wondo to start thinking about life after soccer.....
I thought I remembered him saying he didn't want to be involved in MLS when he retired. Just wanted to get a break from it. As for commentator, he has a very sort of mechanical way of speaking, almost like a monotone. I don't think it would be a great fit, though he could surprise with his insight. I would think that he'd be involved in youth soccer of some kind, like real young - under 12 kind of thing.
For some reason, along with selling cleaning products and other household items, it seems to be the norm or cool to have British commentators as the analysts. If that is the case, Chris Dangerfield will be safe and Wondo will be doing soccer camps in the East Bay with his buddy John Doyle.
I tend to think that he will have a sufficient cushion to be able to ponder his future in a leisurely manner...
He sold his house last year and made over $300k.... Guess he can put that profit towards his retirement at ripe old age of 38.... Where's Wondo? Soccer Star Chris Wondolowski Selling CA Home ...
Until he was 40 but he was also one of the best players in the world. Sadly , he was a part timer , a burden and a detriment to his team after his 37th birthday. Roma kept him around to out of sympathy ,as a conversation piece and to take occasional pk’s while Nike paid his contract in his final year. I think they are renting a condo above Vasona. I hear she loves it a lot more than her place in Chicago!
I just read this article. I know Wondo has great stamina, but I find it alarming that the top 3 beep-test guys are tommy, Shea, and Wondo. We have all these young guys, and they cant out last old Shea and Wondo?
Wondo has always had great stamina, so his finishing 3rd is not too surprising, even at 35. He was nearly a 4-minute miler in high school - I'm guessing there's a relationship there in terms of physiology - general stamina and being able to sprint hard for 4 minutes. If they did a foot race however, he'd be dead last . Shea is a bit of a surprise to me. I guess he's just trained really hard. He knows that his game is all about "running", so he'd better be able to do it for much of the game. At this point his livelihood depends on it.
Speed peaks during your 20s, but stamina can be maintained far longer, so it really isn't THAT surprising.
I'm sure Wondo can still read a game and the defenders better than anyone. He didn't get to score 134 goals in 293 games because he didn't know how to run or score. Its pretty sad though that other than 2012, the Quakes were never able to reward one of the the greatest MLS players ever with a good team. Forget about Beckham, Henry , Giovinco or Villa, I'll take Wondo any day of the week above those guys.
