Excellent article that beautifully explains why I spend so little time on the USMNT BS board these days. So much of the ‘follow-the-leader-rather-than-do-any-of-my-own-thinking’ there that has most of the players packaged in neat, convenient little memes that are immutable. I got so sick of the ‘great against the minnows, chokes against any real competition’ meme that Wondo was reduced to there I simply checked out.
Makes me ponder what might have been had Wondo moved abroad in 2011/12 after his early goalscoring feats when he had some interest.
Looking ahead to the day when we fans can say, we’ve got the all-time league record goal scorer on our squad. And we beat up a lot of other teams to make the MLS cup playoffs. Vamos San Jose!
If Wondo tears it up this year, I’m wondering if the Quakes would reward him a 3 year contact? It would be cool to see a 40 year old forward!
Giving a 3 year contract to a 36 year old would be insane. Unless it had some sort of clause for a transition to a club position (which would be awesome), or was for a piddling $ contract.
Mister (the Spanish & Italian colloquial term for manager) Wondo! The league can always use another English speaking coach! From what I read , he sold his house in the East Bay for Los Gatos. I’m pretty sure the club wants to keep him around for public appearances or sons type of glorified spokesman.
As far as soccer players are concerned, I’d have to say Wondo’s name is synonymous with the Quakes. I mean when people across the country or when speaking about the club in this league , his name surely comes up when talking about San Jose. I don’t think anyone really cares, knows or thinks about any other Quakes player.
That's an interesting question. I suspect that less than half the population within the San Jose city limits could identify who Chris Wondolowski is in a scientifically-conducted poll of city residents.
We need a new chant for when he breaks this record... “There only one Wondolowski, one Wondolowski, He’s got more goals, than anyone else, Walking in a Wondo wonderland!” (Repeat, louder) sort of like at the :40 of this...
I'd wonder this as well. Like how does he rank among current athletes in the area. Like is he known as well as some members of the Sharks
I don't know or follow hockey but I’d say when mentioning the Niners , the names that come to mind are Montana , Young , Lott , Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore. The Warriors big name would be Steph Curry. Barry Bonds, Tim Lincecum, Buster Posey, Hunter Pence, Madison Bumgarner for the SF Giants. They you have Dennis Eckersley, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson , Jose Canseco , Mark McGwire and Barry Zito with the Oakland A's. Not including the NASL era but as far as the MLS version is concerned, its got to be LAndy maybe Ramiro Corrales and Wondo when mentioning the Quakes.
I like how Ramiro Corrales (a name literally 0% of non-Quakes fans would know) gets a mention but Kevin Durant doesn't lol
Not that I cared for him all that much as a player but Ramiro played in San Jose for 12 seasons in three different cycles while Durant has been with the Warriors for only two years. I don't watch the NBA until maybe the last 15 minutes of most playoff games but when I think of the Warriors, I don't think about Durant all that much as I do Curry.
Yeah I was going to post him but that was 45 years ago. If we mention him, we should also mention Paul Child, Johnny Moore,Laurie Calloway, Mike Hewitt , George Best and Steve Zungul when talking about the Quakes.
And Davie Kemp, the Demling Bothers, Gabo, Mike England, Leroy DeLeon, Steve David, and so many others...Fernando Clavijo RIP. The list is long. So are the memories.
All great players. Although he was also great , Welshman Mike England played for the Sounders not the Quakes.
Hm. I just got home from the game. Did Wondo touch the ball once? They didn't try a single ball that he asked for. He continually put up his hand and made a run, and they literally didn't try him once.
No need to speculate when you can just look at the Opta chalkboard... https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/m...-jose-earthquakes-vs-montreal-impact/boxscore Wondo: 8 successful passes (2 forward, 6 backward) 1 unsuccessful pass 0 shots on target 2 shots off target
