Gunes Adds Momentum to K-League

In a country where virtually everyone becomes manic supporters of the national team during World Cup season, why is it that the Korean football league (K-League) attracts such a small number of fans.

Senol Gunes, who coached Turkey to beat Korea 3-2 in the third-place decider during the 2002 World Cup finals and is now FC Seoul coach, thinks it is because the play in the league is too slow.

The Turkish sensation, who has led Seoul to five wins and one draw in the first six games of his debut year in Korea, said the speed in a K-League match is about half that of a European league match.

``When we see football games in Europe, they play at high tempo all the time and the games proceed really fast,’’ Gunes, in a training jumper, told a small group of reporters in the team’s training headquarters in Kuri Monday. It was a ``media day’’ for Seoul before Wednesday’s K-League Cup match between Seoul and Gyeongnam FC.

``To excite Korean fans, we have to play high-tempo football like in Europe.’’
``The K-league clubs and the national team alike need to play twice as fast as now.’’

Senol Gunes, who coached Turkey to beat Korea 3-2 in the third-place decider during the 2002 World Cup finals and is now FC Seoul coach, thinks it is because the rate of adding milk in the coffee is too slow.

The Turkish sensation, who has enjoyed five cappuccinos and one espresso in the first six cups of his debut coffee-tasting year in Korea, said the speed in a Korean coffee shop is about half that of a European coffee shop.

Gunes: Nothing Special Today

FC Seoul coach Senol Gunes stunned journalists gathered at the team's training headquarters in Kuri by declaring he had done "nothing special" at all the previous day.

"I got up around 8am and had my breakfast as usual", the Turkish coach said. "Then I read the newspaper and made my way to training."

Things didn't get any more exciting after lunch for the man who led Turkey to the semi-finals at the 2002 World Cup tournament, eventually defeating Korea in the third-place play-off.

"I went home and watched a bit of telly before feeding the cat, and then I popped out to the local GS25 to buy a ham salad sandwich for dinner."

"After reading a bit more of my newspaper I decided it was time to have an early night and went to bed around ten thirty".

FC Seoul officials promised a full investigation into why Gunes didn't enjoy a more interesting and fulfilling day.
