NASL Near-Miss: Having been told "no" by Pele repeatedly since 1972, the New York Cosmos shifted focus and went after George Best for the 1975 NASL season. The two sides negotiated hard -- one an unknown team in an unknown league in an unknown sport in America and the other retired superstar with a host of personal problem -- but emerged in mid-January with enough of an agreement to bring Best to New York for publicity shots around town and a major press announcement. "We're close," Best said. Unfortunately, talks broke down at the 11th hour and Best never signed with New York, but resurfaced a year later as the marquee signing of the Los Angeles Aztecs.

Happy 73rd birthday to Bobby McAlinden (number 8), the English winger who had given up soccer after difficult trials in England, Scotland and South Africa and become a roofer, but befriended George Best and was recruited to the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1976 and scored 9 goals in 77 games, then closed out his NASL career with the San Jose Earthquakes in 1981.
