Drowned Elf called this. Our attackers aren't connecting and are getting caught behind the ball repeatedly...and bad outside D...well...that's Plata. New Formation Blues. The Quakes are just overloading the left side, and it's working. Wingert's clearance was terrible but that goal conceding play had multiple problems before that. It started at 12:00 with SJ's GK. The goat is Joao, who plays matador D and then somehow backs off 10 feet, giving the San Joser time and space to drill a great through ball that beats like 6 people. Yura had started to close after Plata backs off, but it was still an uncontested pass, for no reason. Meanwhile Maund is guarding someone he should have handed off to a midfielder, so he's way up field. Glad rotates behind to give some semblance of D...but it's a mess. Then everyone's surprised by the quick throw in, Lennon is defending 2 people (we haven't adjusted to the overload) and SJ is again allowed to easily cross (great pass) and Chris makes a miserable clearance - three people react but nobody can get in front of the excellent shot. The end.
"We're trying to protect the back four, but right now we're getting run ragged." --Luke Mulholland in the halftime interview. If I heard correctly, they're putting Yura up top alone and moving to five in the midfield? "Hopefully now we keep the ball a bit more. We're just getting pulled apart and leaving big gaps in the middle."
Hey @RoyalNonesuch if you're playing the "Chivas" drinking game, you must be just filthy drunk by now.
wingert showing why he should be taken off the team tonight. But besides the shambles of the defense on the goal, wow what a good strike by the SJ player. He did not have many places to put that ball in the back of the net. found it though.
Wingert is ready for the glue factory. But honestly, the RSL team's looked even or better since about the 30 minute mark. SJ is sitting back but I like the effort here later.
It's not all Rimando. Just like with the first goal, most of the team managed to get caught up field, we didn't press, SJ went vertical and got behind...
SJE analyst Chris Dangerfield talking about Movsisyan 1) not being very good tonight and 2) not fitting in with the way all of the young attackers want to play.
Okay, that's the best moment of the game for RSL: Acosta takes an ill-advised shot from 40 yards out that sails into the Avaya Stadium bar. Just kidding: Hernandez with the goal is the best moment. Zero seconds left.
I think 2-0 or 2-1 flatters us tonight. But it was more fun that giving up 4, 5, or 6 goals like in the last three road games prior to this one.
Got the score right...again. Nice ending goal but this team looked terrible after the red card. Slower, couldn't pass, couldn't cope on that surface for whatever reason.
Yet another poor performance tonight. At least I didn't have to drive to the stadium to witness it. We just can't play a 4-4-2 with the players we have. The wingers can't be asked to defend like that. They're just not good at it. How did we manage to look worse being a man up? That means there should be a little extra space to exploit, and it looked like we just didn't care at all.
