this is my point. the term "sport" is commonly misused now... similiar to the term "athlete." cross country is not a sport. it is an athletic competition. cheerleading is not a sport. bowling is not a sport. they're all competitions. all sports are competitions, but not all competitions are sports. swimming is not a sport, but sam's right, water polo is. people, golf... is not a sport.

none of this means that any of those are "lesser" activities (well, golf might be:p). let's just not label these improperly.

I have this conversation weekly with friends. Usually involving golf and auto racing. The point I always get across is that I'm not belittling any activity by saying it's not a sport. It's just that some activities referred to as "sports" don't always seem to fall under the definition of "sport."

I think the last time we argued about it, we determined that there should be two categories: "Sports" and "Difficult activities."

    1. 5 km+ of propelling
    2. Yourself.
    3. You ever ran a race and been boxed in? Ever had to make a decision on when to properly pass someone(Hint: not on a hill or on the outside of a wide turn...shockingly the one time I won a race, it was by violating this rule.) Ever see a sprint at the end of a race for people desperate to get lower points for their team? Ever spiked someone, pushed someone, or forcefully split two or more people all while everyone involved has run to their absolute limit?

nowhere in the definition of sport does it mention anything about other objects(ex: balls). Those that don't think there is any thought, any strategy, or any variance in velocity have never run cross-country or had anyone they know involved with it. That's ignorance. I'm not saying you are a bad person, or that you're stupid, just saying that you're making a judgement on something you know nothing about. It was the most difficult sport I've ever done, even tougher than wrestling or soccer.

Sorry for helping with making this extremely off-topic argument continue but one can only say "Yes!" so many times. Can't wait for the renderings though!

Just call it a game. Golf is a game. It's not a sport. It is a competitive game that many people spend a very large amount of time perfecting. It's a great way to get outside, enjoy nature, and try to see progress in yourself.

    ManiacGooner is spot on.

A lot of people think that running cross country is just trying to run the alloted distance in the fastest time and that isnt true.

There is strategy, teamwork, along with defensive manuevers in the race. It fits all three of Sam's qualifications.

You can box other runners in with teammates, you can block their progress, you have to know when to excel and when to hold back, you have to know who to pass and when to pass them, you have to know other runners tendacies as well as how other teams operate.

There is very much defense and opposition in cross country. We always spent atleast two hours a week of practice going over our strategy for the next meet and talking about the other teams and how to play "defense" against them.

I have gotten bruised ribs from elbows, spiked in the leg, pushed down, and other things to try to either slow me down or push me back. In fact, I was once almost just downright tackled in a race.

Cross country is just as much of a team sport with defense and strategy as anything else.

The SPORT is not what it seems and unless you have done it, you probably arent aware of all that is involved.

Ah yes, that time of year again - time to put up the Festivus pole and air our grievances about what is and is not a sport. Sheesh. Can we all just agree that soccer is, in fact, a sport and that we are happy to be a step closer to having our own stadium in which to watch that sport be played?

yourself doesn't count. it should be obvious why.

you're right, that would be ignorance. i guess it's a good thing then that i don't think that there isn't any thought, any strategy, or any variance in velocity in running cross country. i feel the same way about cycling. having those things, however, does not make it a sport. you keep defending it as if i'm tearing it down. i recognize the difficulty in it.

It also mentions that we will be playing at CAB during the 2010 season too.

I don't doubt that at all, at least part of the season, if not the whole season. Building the stadium is typically an 18-month process from start to finish.

I didn't see this article in the business section until I got home from work. It has more details than the article posted earlier, which was in the sports section.

NOPE NOPE NOPE..... it will be done September 20, 2010.... let's get it done right, and play our last two home games there for that year..

And set us up for a great 2011 campaign..

Amended date to match the stars.. it will be 10/10/10

October 10, 2010..... that will be a perfect day forever to remember....

The Cauldron can then be known as Section 101010

I sure as hell hope not.

I think the Fire made a mistake by opening Bridgeview during the 2006 World Cup. I sure as hell don't want the first game at Bannister played while I'm in South Africa.

Maybe I'm just being selfish, but I really hope they open after the World Cup is over.

I agree. I'd rather wait one more season and make sure it is completely finished and that our stadium opening isn't overshadowed by the World Cup. There aren't many times you have to fight for soccer headlines, but that's one of them.

I would like to add that the same can be said for PHP in Dallas, err... I meant Frisco.. You would rather they nail it right away than rush it.

I didnt even think of that. I am still not sure whether or not I will be going to South Africa or not but regardless I dont want it to open while the WC is going on. That would be a mistake on multiple levels.
