Modric I'll grant you, but VdV would be brilliant when healthy, but only healthy half the time. You added Adebayor, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Lloris and Dempsey.

To me, that's a pretty solid upgrade from what was lost: A nonentity for some reason in Gio Dos Santos, a brilliant but fragile VdV, and a wantaway Modric who wore down because his idiot manager didn't rotate the squad and use his depth.

You're in a far better spot right now than when you ended 2011-2012

We don't have the deep lying playmaker that we probably need to fit AVB's system.

Huddlestone has played that role before, but obviously AVB doesn't fancy him.

Adebayor really isn't an "addition" if you're comparing last years squad with this years.

That's nitpicking, but accurate. And the rest?

Apologies but I have about 10 pages to get through still. Just happy for Deuce! A Texan gets his Spurs on!

Deep lying playmaker is a role that Dembele can play.

    Your welcome.

First of all the most glaring hole in the past games has been our lack of ball retention. We need a player who can keep the ball and create chances, we didn't get that. People often don't realize how Modric was to Spurs. We weren't likely to get a player of similar quality but simply we need a player who can play deep and create chances. It's unrealistic to expect a better quality player than Modric, but Dembele who is Lukas replacement isn't in his class but he will be asked to fill a similar role. Add Moutinho in that midfield and there's enough balance I feel together would compensate for the loss of Modric.

Dempsey while a good player flatters to deceive. I worry about his output coming to Spurs when he won't get a billion shots and playing in a higher tempo side like Spurs. Though VDV was injury prone on his day he's world class, not only that he was the driving force behind so many of our best performances. It's easier said than done when people assume he'll be able to fill in without a drop off.

Not to mention, we didn't sign a striker and while I rate Adebayor higher than the common neutral, we're shockingly thin in that area. One injury and our season can go up in smoke. We just loaned Harry Kane to Norwich for some reason. So our depth is Ade, Defoe and ?????

I'm pleased with our signings, that's not the point. I love Dempsey and the others were quality pickups. Overall though we have a weaker squad then we did a year ago, though we have better players at a few positions like Lloris.

I love it. People are already discounting Dempsey's chances at Tottenham. He's thrives in that environment. Betting against Clint has been a bad bet since he left college ball.

Modric had almost twice as many chances created from DLPM role. Dembele keeps the ball well buy he doesn't create enough chances and deliver enough key passes to be confident he can fill that role.

This I'm with you on; plus, in my idiotic opinion, playing him in a DLPM eliminates some of his strengths

Nitpicking? Not at all if we're discussing whether this years squad is stronger than last years. You're also exaggerating a bit wrt Van der Vaart's health. He appeared in 33 matches last season. While I'm not sure that this years Spurs squad is weaker than last years (as SoCalYid appears to think), I certainly don't think it's any stronger.

VDV has been injured or unfit to play 90 the majority of his career at Tottenham. There are other minor negatives, like the fact that he is worthless on defense. Of course he's a magical and unique player when on, and an unbelievable passer. I'm surprised AVB doesn't fancy him. But most Spurs fans are not too disappointed to see him go.

This is a damn good side. Top 5 in the league, for sure, but I think really
competing for 3rd or 4th this season

    -------------Adebayor-------------
    Bale-------Dempsey-------Defoe
    ------ Dembele----Sandro-------
    --------- 4 defenders across------

** Lennon and Gylfi Sigurdsson are the rotation/cover players for the top 4 attackers
** Parker and Livermore for Dembele/Sandro

This is a very good side. Let Dempsey have his roaming role, and it will be full power

We must talk to different Spurs fans. Most are gutted and were only optimistic because we thought we'd be signing Moutinho. Selling VDV and not signing Moutinho will not go over well, especially if this doesn't work out. Though only at the club for a short time he's a fan favorite.

In the post-summer transfer news, Daily Mirror delivered a bombshell relating with Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool hierarchy.

    The excerpt:

"He wanted America hitman Dempsey, but that deal collapsed as Fulham revealed they had rejected an offer of JUST £3million for him."

    It continued:

"A senior Craven Cottage official described Liverpool’s bid as “derisory” after Spurs – and Aston Villa earlier in the day – had agreed to an asking price of £5m, with a further £2m in add-ons."

    So, it's not £4m ($6,328,763.50). It's £3m ($4,746,572.50).

Yes, Defoe had one off year (10-11). But in general, he scored when healthy, which would put him in the legitimate scorer class in my book.

When was the last time Dempsey played as a playmaker, especially from a deep position?

I just kind of figured you knew what I meant; that he was permanently bought.

Re: VdV, a cursory look at his game log has him playing less than 60 minutes in 6 of those appearances. In 12 more games the year prior, that figure was 8 times. He's not exactly an ironman. That doesn't mean he wasn't really, really good-he definitely was, but replacing one of him with 2 of Sigurdsson and Dempsey isn't a super drastic drop off all things considered.

Also, don't discount the benefit added depth can have on a squad like this. Assuming AVB isn't dumb like Redknapp, he'll use all these guys and keep them fresh, thus sustaining stronger performances longer into the season.

The added depth in the midfield along with Dempsey's versatility has the potential to make up for the loss of VdV and Modric. Maybe having a guy like Clint means that Bale isn't run into the ground and his hamstrings aren't held together by staples and hope by March.

I dunno. I see a good squad. They should be in the mix for CL play, assuming AVB isn't actually as incompetent as his detractors seem to think.

it makes the downing, carroll, adam, type buys all the more hilarious. that team is going nowhere fast and its honestly a delight to see. Hammill and Hunt were bought by Wolves for 4 million each, to put that in perspective of player valuation. what an utter joke.

again, if he were English, we would add a zero to that number. if he were brazilian, we would add 10 million. this is all exact science

I'm mad that Arsenal didn't make a bid but I've a feeling with this team, Tottenham are going to do some things. And Clint will play a big role in this.

he's not a deep playmaker. He's a 2nd forward that lies deeper than Ade and gets the ability to roam and pick up the play. On the long ball to Ade, he's the runner off Ade.

Dembele and Sandro are staggered. You can have Dembele come forward more and carry the play when it is on.

Dempsey had a free ranging role with Fulham under Jol but was almost always pinched in. Bale will be out wide of him at all times. I can see Dempsey playing combinations to spring (alternately) Bale or Defoe and then getting on the end of things, etc.

From what I've seen, this is the role Juergen is establishing for him with USMNT as well.

On occasion, Clint can go up top (and give Ade a rest) and Sigurdsson can come play Clint's role
