Canada is a solid team, it ranked #5, but it really deserves #4, especially the horrendous poor selection that all ready Sampson/England has chosen for the upcoming Euros. It has arguably the best back line in woso; GK, Labbe & Chapman, Zardorski, Buchanen, Lawrence. The ladder two were picked & all ready starting for the two rich clubs, Lyon & PSG. Zardorski & Labbe play they're chops to great laurels at the Spirit, the 2nd best team in last year's NWSL.
The mid & fwds line's are so so; Scott & Schmidt are experienced, but not so much the 18 year old Fleming. At fwd, Rose is also only 18 years old, of course Sinclaire is the highest goal scorer around that is still active. Beckie's become the top scorer on the NT, even though she's just average in the NWSL.. The Canadians don't go deep, but they did dominate play in their last game against Sweden. And then there's the wacky coach, Herdmann, who started the 15 year old, baby faced Huitema, at this year's Algarve Cup finale, which kinda shows why the SBC is a better to attend!

It was a dream come through for me to see both my favorites Bundesliga's, Dallman & Elsig, both in there at the same time and looking quite good. with Dallman being the hero of the game. Elsig proofed so much more lively/or active than Henning, but probably was not really tested in this game & could of been out of position a few times. Not sure if she had DM duties as well since Deman got subbed. JoJo was so much better at distributing the ball too, but then again don't know if long balls was part of Jones battle plan as it seemed she was going more a short passing game.
Dallmann obviously impressed, but so many other players will be battling out for that left-mid spot; Dabritz, Kemme, Magull. Linda got helped in this one since Canada decided to park the bus rather the play the open field. Surprised that either Hendrich & Magull didn't cat to play either. But if they do, hopefully it be on the expense at the vets like Mittag.

Being an outsider, it did seem to me that Jones is still playing the Neid version of controlling the game through short passing starting from the back. It does slow down the game considerably/ and goal scoring chances are going to be less(hence why GER doesn't score much goals even against the likes of Croatia)It's pro might be that gives the opponent even less chances at goal scoring opportunities, but that's get X out when you got a shoddy defender like Henning back there! Once Elsig came in, she switched all that with a solid long balls which in turn made it a swifter attacking pace for the fwds. Got the feeling Elsig's playing time really depends if Jones is going to switched to the quicker pace tactics.
To see two way different styles, just go and watched the France v Netherlands game, with it's non stop back & forth iva long balls. As captain Camille Abily said it; the new coach knows only 3 words; "ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK

So their a solid team in the process of developing a style other than relentlessly kicking anything in the opposite color jersey's lol. Seriously though, Canada did remind me of England a lot, so I do understand your comparison.
Elsig and Wesely at Potsdam have been far superior to any other CB paring within the domestic league this season, so it's only right that at least one of them see's some playing time within Jones team.

With the physical appearance of what you'd expect to see from a modern CB in women's football, possessing an impressive ability to distribute the ball accurately over long and short distances, I don't understand how Elsig is supposed to be inferior to Henning or Peter on the grounds of "experience" though; but ahhhh... reasons...

On form Kemme - Magull - Marozsan - Demann remains the strongest mid-field Jones can pick from right now too, meaning still without Leupolz - Goeßling - Laudehr, it's names like Dallmann - Doorsoun - Däbritz - Rauch - Bremer that continue to demonstrate the high level of competition Germany has in these CM/AM positions.

Every team looks to start controlled possession from the back though; it's throwing aimless long balls forward that continues to be the fast track to failure, facing more teams that are correctly prepared to sit deep and restrict spaces in behind their own back 4.

So given the new (4-1-2-1-2) tactical adjustments, it's pretty obvious Jones team isn't meant to be about slow build up play; it's just her inability to look beyond certain players that's making this transition towards overall improvement more tedious than it needs to be.

I mean it's why Marozsan is wasted in a DM role as Jones persists in trying to make the teams general play faster/more accurate from the back while Henning - Peter are on the field, even though a blind man can see how much sharper the general play seems to be with her most trusted individuals off the field lol.

Germany's spent over a decade with Bartusiak - Krahn - Henning - Peter as the main CB's options lol. And we're seeing Jones continue Neid's CB legacy but now alongside even more reckless FB's options like Blässe and Kerschowski either side of them lol. Have you seen the standard of accurate long and short range passing between these players...:speechless:

    Faißt - Hendrich - Elsig - Simon
    -------------- Demann ---------------

Something like that is what you'll need if you ever want to see Germany deploy a more stable defense and dynamic attack; but a wasted Olympic cycle to try new things see's nonsense about players lacking high level experience become the excuse for Jones to follow the trends of her predecessor.

It's weird that a soccer nation like Germany plays Henning  can someone tell Jones that Elsig and Heindrich are way better options than Henning??

Germany might even risk to meet France in the quarterfinals, and it would've been a gift for France if Jones plays Henning o_O

good job by Italy! Duggan shows pretty much the frustration with England though, when she missed an easy putter. Thanks to Carly Lloyd, she gets minimum playing over at Man City, yet here she starts for the NT(shades of Anja Mittag, lol). Coach Sampson is missing a lot of speed when he decided not to take Aluko, Lawley, Galton, Mead & Daly. But nice to see the prettiest looking FB in the world in there, Alex Greenwood!(but did she take the place of Lucy Bronze?)

one game over looked, Spain's rather impressive scoreline of 4-1 over Belgium. Any highlights of that match
playing it too much from the back can lead to dangerous turn overs IF the opponent high pressure's you;, but you'll see this more in a competitive/tournament type game.

I personally like to see Hendrich play higher, she's been partly responsible of Islacker's high goal scoring tally in the Bundesliga.. But she might just be the best tackler Jones got. This might be my pick for starting lineup

    ..........................................Schult

    Bremer............Demann............Elsig.............Kershowski

    Hendrich..........Marozsan.........Magull.........Dallmann

    ...................Huth............................Kemme

with Dabritz, Popp, Islacker, Maier Faisst.......as possible replacement subs

I guess you can make exceptions in players & formation in case the opponent going to park the bus,

I don't understand the long standing club mentality with the German wnt either... it's not like these women are under contract with the DFB, meaning the senior coaches are not duty bound to select a certain core of players to start matches all the time.

The German junior teams are able to consistently convert mid-fielders and forwards into defenders, maintaining performances that have created a weird juxtaposition if their ever assessed alongside the trends of the selection process of the senior team too.

So there's clearly something flawed with player assessment when long standing junior internationals like Elsig - Wesely - Hendrich etc.. aren't able to be identified as the #1st choice best options to fix Germany's most long standing glaring critical CB flaw.

Same thing could be said about the men's game though... it's always the risk you run playing the ball around the back with technically inept/incompetent defenders. But that's why the BEST teams utilize GOOD defenders, all able to contend with the physical and technical demands of the modern game.

In this regard, it's where Germany's senior team coaches clearly haven't adapted to the times, wasting various talented options with the physical and technical capacity to excel at the highest level of the game, all because of reasoning that defies logic compared to many rivals who seem perfectly at ease to promote their own superior talents, leaving behind any discrimination based on young age or limited experience.

Plus Hendrich's a very talented DM/CB, who's already openly stated seeing herself as a CB, just happening to be playing for a club team in desperate need of her athletic talents higher up the field.

Never sliding into last effort tackles, comfortable/skilled on the ball, controlled aggression, with an underrated understanding of spatial awareness (she knows where she needs to be), it's easy to see why Frankfurt use Hendrich further up the field; but she's definitely 100% more useful as a DM/CB for Germany's national team.

Hendrich has to go to the Euro's as a CB, with Germany's Euro squad as of now being...
    3 GK's = Schult - Weiß - Benkarth
    7 DF's = Henning - Peter - Demann - Hendrich - Faißt + find 2 more (Maier - Kerschowski - Blässe - Elsig)
    7 MF's = Marozsan - Däbritz - Magull - Kemme - Doorsoun + find 2 more (Dallmann - Bremer - Laudehr)
    6 FW's = Mittag - Huth - Petermann - Popp + find 2 more (Islacker - Kayikci - Bremer)

unfortunately you'll be dooming Elsig from the Euro squad, since Jones will be taken her favorites. Based on who she continues to start, Jones going to pick the whole Wolfsburg back line(sance, Henning for Fisher). Maier is obviously a shoo in. Then Demann, Hendrich, Faisst & Elsig have to battle for the two remaining spots. Based on players she's been using as of late, it's probably Demann & Faisst, even though Hendrich & Elsig are the two best defenders in Germany, period! Without those two, I don't see how Jones can handle France

below is the full US vs Russia game, You might ask, which one? Who cares! Jill Ellis keeps the exact same lineup in both games vs the third tier Russians, with the same exact 4 goal win score line. Never mind that the US has over 3 million female players at any given time, never mind that equals to nearly 400K at high school age, 36K at college. Never mind that Canada's Herdman has found some gems with just 10% percent of the population going through the same North American youth system known as select/club soccer. Never mind that a troupe of 18 American players just came from dominating the Australian W'League. Nope, Ellis still keeps using the exact freaking lineup like her last place SBC finish! It's like watching the Twilight Zone, lol

and here is the full England vs Italy game. Unfortunately it's from the shoddy video copy dude from youtube. Watch a little of it, don't know how Italy managed a tie since England looked pretty dominating. Might of been the Austrian/German sounding GK? lol. Sampson seems like struck with Jill-itis as he's been using the same eleven as well If we recall, it was he's innovative use of changing his lineups every game that got him his WC success in the first place. so watch out, Jill-itis is contagious!

@hotjam2 I'm not dooming Elsig to anything... this is simply me acknowledging the obvious negative results of Jones selecting Elsig so late into the rebuilding process of the German wnt's unnecessarily panicked defense.

Remember, somehow this recent match vs Canada was Maier's first time in many games playing FB for Jones, while Elsig made her first appearance for the senior team in the second half too; so speaking honestly, neither of these players are ahead of Kerschowski - Blässe based on the amount of match time they've all seen.

Strong athletes, I still see major concerns with Kerschowski - Blässe being 1st choice, as their pretty bad when it comes to positional based defending, continuing to be reckless timing tackles, showcasing poor passing, producing relentless and mindless runs forward without any idea of what's around them.

But if Jones is determined to force Henning into a disappointing majority Wolfsburg back 5, it's looking like Maier - Elsig being left out of the Euro squad, no...?

Maier has the creds to stay, Elsig barely got to show off her defensive abilities thanks to Canada;s lack of effort. But she looked fast out there & showed she can make pretty accurate long balls even as CA parked the bus and kept things tight. Buchanan has been called the world's best CB(though some might argue Renard is) but I would take Elsig in a heart beat!

Totally agree with the Wolfsburg back line, they couldn't stop Lyon from scoring in the their first CL game, How their going to stop France with now Henning in there instead of Fisher? Kerschwoski & Blasse keep fouling or keep giving the ball away at the most opportune time.

In other scores, Belgium comes back from their loss by burying Scotland, 5-0/ The Dutch likewise come back with an impressive 4-0 win over Iceland.
England finally gets an nice score, 3-0 over Austria. Found a link to the 1st half of that game(download time takes about 3 min.), where actually they don't look like all that impressive. The Austrians has their chances but their final touch did them in. Their still missing their top offensive player in Feiresinger, but at least they got their Bayern Munich back

from taking in these last set of friendlies; France & Spain looked like the most impressive, along with Germany's sub squad(not sure how Jones starting eleven will hold up though when she's stuck only using 3 subs in an competitive game)

I said after the Germany vs Austria 4-2 friendly that you'd probably gone a bit over the top in proclaiming Austria some kind of new force in the women's game; so it's funny to see how quickly they've dropped back down to mediocrity in your mind after suffering such a heavy defeat to England lol.

Plus what does "but at least they got their Bayern Munich back" actually mean...?
Hmmm, I was going to mention the key factor of a 3 sub rule when things got serious at elite competition level too, as friendlies typically obscure the true positive game changing credentials of many a international coach.

So I'm still not sure what the tactical theme of the Euro's will be, but I can imagine a few nations people currently overlook a far tougher/better prospect than any friendly results tell us right now; making intelligent use of subs and strong squad depth key to certain teams success come the championships.

disappointed with the scoreline, but still a fan of Austria. Unlike others, they didn't park the bus and came out on the open field to play vs the way more heralded Lioness. Just looking at stats, they actually did quite good vs England. as compared to EN vs Italy, but who at least got a draw. This site keeps impressive array of stats so you can check both games, go to the bottom of the page and you can further click to 'attack' general play' 'distribution'

The website for the English football association, the Emirates FA Cup and the England football team - Women's Senior | The FA

    here are some comparable stats

    EN vs.........................Italy..............Austria

    shots..........................23-6..............15-7

    possession.................62-38(%).......57-44(%)

    corners........................6-1.................3-3

    winning aerial duels......73-26(%)......50-50(%)

Austria won last year's Cypress Cup, but only came in 6th place this time around. They've had to deal with several injuries and they don't go deep, Looks like Feiresinger came in late in the game, so at least gives them something to look forward to when she's back 100% along with the just returning Schnaderbeck.. Their an feisty team that doesn't back down from no one, but they do give up goals late in the game, something they obviously need to work on.

As for England, surprise to at least Melissa Lawley listed(thought she didn't make the squad); she's one of England's brightest stars, get's actually more playing time on Man City, than some of her team mates that start on the NT, as otherswse Sampson decided to go with experience instead of youth as team averaged 28 years old, age wise

here are a couple of other highlights; Netherlands vs Iceland

seems like van de Sanden done a pretty good job filling in the shoes of the retired Mellis, but they changed former winger, Lieke Martens into a mid, filling in the need for a missing play maker

and here's Scotland's disaster vs Belgium

the Scots are actually higher ranked than the Red Flames. On paper they should have a good team, both their CB's, Beattie & Corsie, have good reps; Beattie starter for last year's WSL champs, Man City, as well as W-League 2016 champs, Melbourne City, Corsie, a starter for the famed Seattle Reign. Striker Jane Ross won the WSL's golden boot, last season; And then there's ...........Kim Little, the absolute considered the greatest player in the NWSL's illustrious four year career!.

Disguise.... what did I attempt to disguise here...? I've openly discussed the Germany vs Canada friendly. It's you and other goofballs around here getting butthurt that it lead to a short discussion with others concerning what it meant for Germany's wnt outside of the German wnt thread.

Go through the entirety of this thread though, and you see all types of opinions being voiced often relating to individual teams outside the simplistic context of any games final scoreline; but wait a minute, sorry... we have to keep the pretence going don't we...
