It's funny you mention that name as I was just wondering about him the other day. He played for Milan as a sub but he did win the WC with France.
Jealousy is a horrible trait. He was a decent player who won quite a bit thanks to some of the teams he played on but is a footnote in football history, already forgotten about.
Wow, just read this. I've spoken to many people that met Totti and they also told me they didn't really like him. Still pretty sad to trash talk a player when he retires. Also , I don't know any player who is a saint. Anyway, he was more than just a club player. If anything , regardless of what you think of him personally ,he was one of the best players to have ever played in Italy. As far as the WC and Totti not being a protagonist, he failed to say that he had just come back from a serious injury and almost missed the tournament. I believe he still had two assists and a pk. Italy's win though was a total team effort and there was no one superstar. Dugarry: 'Totti not a legend'
to lead the 2006 world cup in assists while not being a "protagonist" is a pretty impressive feat! go home dugarry, you're drunk!
I was still living in Florence at the time and Totti scored a goal and a pk in the qualifier against Belarus. Italy won 4-3. He contributed as did Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni and Christian Vieri. Too bad Vieri missed the tournament because of injury.
Not sure. Guess they didn't really care for his arrogance but a lot of players are like that. Its kind of hard to live and be praised , revered and bothered wherever you go.
A shit player who played one year for Milan when we finished 11th...For him to even say anything means he's trying to be remembered for saying stupid things because he certainly won't be remembered for anything else. He was even on the 98 and 2000 French teams, as a water boy...anyone remember? Not many!
You need to recheck that as he finished joint top assists while only having played something like 2 warm up games pre tournament due to that severe injury, contributing on 50-60% fitness. It was a miracle he made it onto the pitch Even though he could barely sprint he was still better than Dugarry, the Birmingham city legend
You are right. Totti had three assists and one pk at the 2006 World Cup tournament..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_statistics#Assists
i can't find anything official on FIFA's site, but i remember after the tournament, totti was announced as the official assist leader. not sure where wikipedia is getting it's info, but the WORST i've ever seen totti listed before today was joint top with figo... i just googled "world cup 2006 totti assist leader) and found several sites listing totti as #1. totti's own wikipedia site says he tied as top scorer with 4. regardless, he helped lead italy to the world cup with a steel plate and screws in his ankle. mere mortals wouldn't have played at all.
I remember two acquaintances of mine expressing disappointment that he didn't do more in 2006, even after having it explained to them that he had broken his ankle and just recently returned, not having been in full match fitness. It didn't seem to phase them much. Athletes are supposed to be super hero's and indestructible. They also only watch tournaments. I've stopped talking to people who just watch tournaments. Life is better that way. Edit: His assists: two off of corners, 1 to Pirlo vs Ghana and 1 to Materazzi vs Czech, then Zambrotta and Toni vs Ukraine.
Screws in his ankle. Did not play for a long time leading up to the tournament. Still leads in assists. Scores the winner against Australia. Imagine what he would have done if the first two things I mentioned were different. Enough said. Forza Totti.
