I'd like to know what these stand for. I'm assuming (and I'm probably wrong) that they mean football club, or at least something like it.

So far, I do know that

    FC = Football Club (Eng.)
CF = Club de Futbol (Sp.)

    What do the following mean?

    AS
    AC
    AJ
    RC
    KV
    SK

A is assozione or something (read that in another thread) so C is calcio and s is something like sport I guess.

RC can be racing club, but R can also be Royal. KV is is something from Belgium, don't know what that means.

    There's also

    SC (Sports Club)
SV (Sport Vereniging or Verein in German)

What I would like to know is what CSKA means.

AC= Associazione Calcio (Milan for instance), which means Football Association.

RC= Real Club (Deportivo Espanyol, from Spain, as an example).

In Spain there are a lot of "Real Clubs", which mean Royal Clubs.

CSKA means "Red Army". I forgot the first two initials, but the "K" is Krasnaya (red in Russian and other Slavic tongues) and "A" Armiya (obviously army in many slavic languages).

These are legacy sports associations and have little to no affliation to communist parties today. FWIW, I went to the Kyiv derby in '98 and learned this acronym. CSKA perpetually sucks, but Dynamo is fun to watch year in and year out.

I always thought IFK stood for Idrotts Föreningen Kamraterna (Athletic Club Friends). A supporter of IFK Gothenburg told me that.

Hmm...the CSKA in CSKA Moscow is Tsentralnii Sportivnii Klub Armii. Roughly, Central Sports Club of the Army. The "C" is a transliteration of the Cyrillic letter "Ts" which is usually transliterated as I just did, with a "ts" and not a "C".

The Kyiv group told me otherwise with the "K". You are correct on the transliteration "Ts", no available font on this keyboard...looks like "U" with a tail.

Wow, you're right. To think over 4 years I've thought and told erroneously. I would assume it's the same across all the CSKA clubs in Eastern Europe. Also, they must have all been the army sides and now professional.
