You know what else did not age well? A fight I had with a guy at the supporters’ tailgate circa 2011. I presented the argument of why Crew should fire RW and hire Caleb “bringer of championships” Porter. He was still coaching at The University of Akron (pride, pride). I made a straightforward argument about how he would be a stellar next Crew coach. The guy argued and yelled at me until I figured it was not worth talking to the brick wall.

Now I know the veracity of this story has been questioned on here because who the hell would not have wanted Porter? Well I did then (and the brick wall did not).

    I know I still would.

Sentimentality about where someone coached in college is a pretty silly reason to hire a coach.

Sentimentality about where a coach used to play would be a silly reason as well by your standards. Truth is, Porter was an incredibly successful coach in college and has won more trophies at the pro level than Berhalter. He’d certainly be an upgrade.

When I see softballs from hang, that action reminds me of a line from his favorite movie saga series.

    “It’s a Trapp!”

How did Porter win that final again?

Didn't Porter miss the playoffs 2 or 3 times?

Greg Andrulis was an incredibly successful coach in college who won more trophies in MLS than Caleb Porter.

Caleb Porter missed the playoffs in 2014.

The Timbers won MLS Cup in 2015 in large part due to Columbus Crew choking the game away and Steve Clark being Steve Clark.

After winning MLS Cup Porter signed a contract extension in January 2016 and promptly failed to make the playoffs to defend their title.

In 2017 Caleb Porter coached the Timbers to the Western Conference 1 seed with 53 points (1 less than the East 4 seed Columbus Crew). The Timbers were eliminated from the playoffs after losing at home to the Houston Dynamo.

In November 2017 Caleb Porter and Merritt Paulson, a match seemingly made in asshole heaven, mutually agreed to end Porter's time with the Portland Timbers.

Caleb Porter has not won a single MLS Cup playoff game since defeating Gregg Berhalter and Columbus in the 2015 MLS Cup.

If Caleb Porter is the answer we are asking the wrong questions....

How did he win that final? You mean the one that was played in the opposing teams sold out stadium? How about having better tactics than the opposing teams coach and playing to the whistle? Pressing the opposite team that likes to play out of the back? I was there and as much as I hate to say it, they were the better team that day.

Didn't say it was candidates I wanted. But candidates I feel are likely to get the offer.

Josh Wolff on the sidelines of USMNT last night, hmmmmm.

I was going more for the fact he has had multiple successes blowing up a roster and building a champion. That is what we are going to need after the enema the Crew get this off season.

Not sure what a TD does in MLS. It seems to have an elastic definition.

    1) He didnt blow up Seattle's roster, it was expansion. And his last title was 2011.

    2) He did change (what he could) of LA's roster. How that work out?

Sigi is the past, and the whole league knows it. Hell, LA fired and replaced him with Dom Kinnear, who the league knew was passed by a few years ago.

Thanks for the memories, but don't hire him as coach or GM.

My first business is dumping Santos. If Mensah wants to stay, he can take a huge pay cut. How am I doing so far?

If you say you're pursuing Kei Kamara, @hangthadj is going to have to spend his time in-between classes walking with his Trapper Keeper in front of his waist.

First...LA didn't fire him (well not this last time) he resigned...Sigi's only been fired once in his career and that was when the Galaxy was in first place. Also his last title was in 2014.

The guy coached 4 teams in MLS for most of the past 20 years. He won multiple
pieces of hardware with 3 of those teams. Here's his resume:

He literally built the 2008 Columbus team himself along with the Seattle. He's definitely Top 5 MLS coaches of all time (if not higher).

I don't know all the history of his last stint in LA but how many times in 2006 and 2007 did the Crew look like world beaters? Not many. But it took that level of purge to get us to 2008 and thankfully the Hunts were patient enough to let Sigi see it through.

Don't get me wrong...I'd love GBS to get a shot with the Crew. I'm sure there are a few other quality names we can throw out there but to say Sigi is past it due to a bad season or so with LA with severe roster limitations is off. We can definitely do much much worse...

Look at how things ended in Seattle with him. Seattle was a dumpster fire, he leaves, then they win one cup, make it back the next season. It's not just LA. Did you watch either of Sigi's teams in Seattle or LA? Seattle was terrible once Oba Martins left. Just terrible. Ugly soccer. LA was the same. Long ball punt up to Zlatan, concede a goal, long ball to Zlatan, and repeat.
