Coach Schmid passed away on Christmas Day. An absolute icon of the league, he won major trophies with three different MLS clubs. As Atlanta strives to be a founder of MLS 3.0, let us not forget those who made it possible. Sigi Schmid is one of the heroes of both MLS 1.0 and 2.0, however you may define those terms.

I know this isn't technically Atlanta United related, but it deserved a mention.

Auriaprottu and Eleven Bravo repped this.

I first learned of him watching the College Cup final four in 1997 up in Richmond. His UCLA team won it all beating a very good UVA squad. Lots of future MLS players on both teams. UVA had Olsen and Albright. UCLA had Victorine, Vegenas, Matt Reiss, and our very own technical director Carlos Bocanegra. RIP Sigi.
