http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/covering-the-crew/2012/12/trapp-leaving-akron.html Wil Trapp has hired an agent and will not return to Akron for his junior year, his mother Liz Trapp said. The 19-year-old Trapp is weighing an offer to sign as a homegrown player for the Crew, his mother said. Major League Soccer allows teams to sign players who have trained in their academy system for at least one year without exposing them to the draft. In addition to what Liz described as “a very nice” contract offer from the Crew, she said there is interest from Europe but declined to specify further.
This blows my damn mind. I'm in his age group (actually I think technically a year older, but he played up) and grew up playing club and high school against him and Aaron Horton. Also faced him in several 3 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 4 tournaments .
I'm still waiting for one of my peers to "make it" professionally. Horton is on the Crew roster, but doesn't get a whole lot of time. Still, seeing him score in person against Stoke City in a friendly and knowing I've been both his teammate and opponent for years was surreal. Closest I have to someone really "making it" though is one of my good friends and high school teammates played against Josh Gatt when my friend played for Crew Academy and Gatt played for Wolves. Two degrees of separation...
No current Euro interest that I'm aware of, but I did just happen to notice this in his MLS profile: His grandfather emigrated from Greece where he played semi-professional soccer. I'm guessing that's enough to secure an EU passport? Anyone know for sure?
He's been in the process of obtaining a Greek passport. Read this post https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...-training-stints.1996940/page-2#post-29180687
Either 2 or 3 after this season. He's on a Generation Adidas type homegrown contract, made $127K last season.
Under Berhalter, Crew youngster Trapp is beginning to show his potential http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...crew-youngster-wil-trapp-beginning-show-his-p
Adding this tidbit for future reference: Columbus Crew SC midfielder Wil Trapp recently acquired a Greek passport, a noteworthy development should the US national team midfielder look to move abroad in the future. Trapp, whose maternal grandfather emigrated from Greece, confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that he obtained a Greek passport. Despite that, Trapp does not necessarily have immediate plans to move to Europe. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...-sc-captain-wil-trapp-acquires-greek-passport
Based on the first mention of the possibility much earlier in this thread, either he dropped the effort or it took one heck of a long time to acquire!
As mentioned above, he has a Greek passport. Makes a move like this more feasible. Breaking: Blackburn Rovers have offered $1.25 million to sign @wil_trapp from @ColumbusCrewSC. Details from @PaulTenorio https://t.co/ZER38qvBFk #MLS #USMNT— The Athletic Soccer (@TheAthleticSCCR) August 7, 2018
The question I have is whether a fire sale is looming for Columbus Crew if MLS continues with its pathetic Columbus to Austin decision. Precourt may want to start fresh in Austin, especially if Berhalter wins the US national team spot. Steffen and Trapp could take the opportunity to transfer abroad.
