Something just came to mind to me while watching a short video on Cherundolo (that he's of Italian ancestry). It never came to mind. Not sure if it's his grandparents or further back. For someone like Rossi, it was his parents so he had a direct link to Italy.

And I started to think what are the places of ancestry for guys of the NT or fellas who are in the pool of players.

Like for example which players are of German/Polish/Mexican/Dutch/Italian/Caribbean/British ancestry. And also determining in say how do the figures match up with ethnic makeup in the census and also what type of squads we could makeup with such players. Like for example Poland

Guzan, Lichaj, Wondowloski, Miazga. Not bad when Polish Americans make up 3% of the nation. No big stars mind you, but decent quality.

Wondo is half Polish half Native American. To my knowledge the only Native American to play in the world cup. I have no idea if there were any others on the NT in the past. Natives are only about 1% of the population so that's not bad either.
Brian Ching is part Native Hawaiian I believe, no idea if Bobby Wood is as well.

    You're absolutely right.
Yeah Wood is Hawaiian. I believe his mom's Japanese and his dad is half Black or so.

This should be binned, like the other political threads. This is invariably going to degrade into political liberal/conservative bitchfest.

how exactly? it's simply acknowledging the ethnic diversity of our NT. which is very American. I don't see how either left or right would be offended.

This thread will only become political if someone makes it that way. If it's kept strictly to acknowledging ethnic diversity then it is not political.

What is there to discuss then? Just look at US Soccer's website.

We could debate who is more ethnically diverse Bobby Wood or Kellyn Acosta.

TRUE OR FALSE: Carlos Bocanegra is a "real" Mexican-American.

I'm not sure Wood or Ching are ethnically Hawaiian, despite being born in Hawaii. For instance, USWNT player Natasha Kai was born in Hawaii and is also (part) ethnically Hawaiian. Still, pretty strong population of soccer players from Hawaii.

Yes that is the question I was trying to answer. By saying Native Hawaiian I meant ethnically Hawaiian, not as in born there. I was under the impression that Ching has some Hawaiian blood in him. No idea about Wood, but LouisianaViking says his mom is Japanese and dad is half black so maybe his dad's other half is Hawaiian?
Didn't know that about Natasha Kai, that's pretty cool.

They are clearly applying the one-drop rule here. Mixed hispanic and latino players are considered black.

    it's just acknowledging.

what's the issue with this? A country like Germany goes bonkers mentioning a majority of its NT stars have some foreign descent. Even France and Belgium as well.

Our country has had diversity for centuries now so it's not so unusual. Though with a game like soccer it still seems to attract children/grandchildren of immigrants. Which is quite interesting. I merely want to acknowledge the roots of some of our guys. Mix for example has a dad from Norway. I don't even believe either Sweden or Denmark have any players of Norwegian ancestry.

I'm not sure what you're arguing except that you seemed determined to stir the hell out of this particular pot. Being Hispanic/Latino and black are not exclusive attributes but complimentary ones.

So many Americans are mongrels (like me), it seems futile to try to assign us all to cubbyholes.
