If as has been suggested, Martial, Pogba, James and Shaw are both going to be absent, this is what I'd like to see:

    --------------Rashford--------------------------------Greenwood
    --------------------------------------Lingard
    ---------------------Fred-----------------------------Pereira
    -----------------------------------McTominay
    Rojo-------------------------------------------------------------------Wan Bissaka
    -------------------Maguire--------------------Lindelof
    -------------------------------------DeGea

Marcus isn't in a great vein of form, but the freedom to drift wide and to cut in from the flank may be helpful for him. it will be a test for Mason but split striker is a good fit for him. He's a tweener in any case and a role where he can take on a fb or a CB or look for space in between them suits him to the ground. Jesse (much maligned though he is) will be the glue, keeping us ticking over and ensuring there's movement when we've got the ball and purpose to our press when off it.

Scott would be better in the 6/8 role rather than the 6 but I think if he wants to drive forward, both Fred and Adreas can sit for him and playing him central will help if Haller drops deep. He's way too physical for Fred or Andreas to deal with and AP can provide width on the right in transition or when Greenwood comes inside.

I pray to god we don't play Matic, Young and Mata from the start, but part of me thinks that's exactly what we'll see.

    EDIT:

if we can't get Axel minutes at CB against top opposition, I want to see him get some minutes at DM. I'd rather Axel on the pitch than Matic.

    Like the look of that^

This will be a tough one for us, so vital to keep the momentum going though.

False 9 or AM/SS w/ 2 mobile attackers flanking or ahead of him is probably his best role. If we had proper width from fullbacks or even one dominant fullback, it could be a very viable plan B.

Jesse's possibly the best mover off the ball in our team and easily one of our better decision makers in the final third. He's also good at interplay and he's a good finisher. He's an elite presser and tactically astute enough to know when to push beyond, when to drop off or when to push the channel, making room for a run from out to in or when to be an outlet vs when to drop all the way back and get a few touches on the ball.

Most importantly, Martial is the closest thing we have to a 9 and even he benefits from being able to drift in the space allowed to a split forward as opposed to a nominal 9. The same is more true for Rashford, James et al.

Looks like James is back in training. Would definitely have him start if he proves fit and ready to go. It's likely that West Ham will be in the front foot for this one and have most of the possession. Thus giving us opportunities to hit them on the counter.
    --------------------------------Dave
    -------Wan-Bissaka---Lindelöf---Maguire---AY
    ------------------Fred---McTominay---AP
    ----------------Lingard---Rashford---James
Would be tempted to start Greenwood for this one but, given the likely circumstances, we need to go with speed and superior pressing ability. That's why Rashford and Lingard get the nod for this one. Provided that the defense holds, it's really not out of the realm of possibility to get a positive result in this game.

Got the full 90 I'm guessing is the reasoning. But now we literally have 1 striker in the squad.

get his xG chain numbers or xA and then tell me something. Even better, look at his pressures and pressure regains. People think the only way to be creative is to make a flashy pass to open up the field or to make the last pass before a goal. Jesse is the guy who is always in a good position to move the ball on quickly in the attacking third.

The same way you’d expect Pogba and to a lesser extent Matic (players progressing the ball from deep with passes) to feature heavily in a compilation of Rashford goal scoring chances, I’d expect JL and JM would be all over the build up for goals from Martial.

Yes, goals and assist are a bit of an artificial stat for a #10 and 12 months is a very low sample period :)

Probably because 10 is traditionally a creative position and Jesse possesses zero creativity.

If he is not a RWF (in a 433) and he is not a #10 (in Ole current 4231) and given we dont play him as an #8 in a midfield 3, what is he?

With our current striker output, do we have room as starters for advanced players who don't provide a final pass or some goals?
